Michelle Mallette
Michelle Mallette is currently the Student Services
Coordinator for the School of
Library, Archival &
Information Studies at The University of British Columbia in
Vancouver. She is responsible for recruitment and alumni relations, as
well as student placements in library and archival information centres.
She is also an adjunct instructor in the Library & Information
Technology program at Langara College, and has worked in both public
and special libraries. Prior to her career in libraries, she worked as
a journalist and editor for several Lower Mainland community
newspapers, where she and her staff earned several awards. She is also
a member of the BC Library Association, and is once again active in the
SLAIS Alumni Association. Among her greatest achievements are growing
artichokes from seed to harvest in a single season, and a B+ in
introductory calculus, ten years after she finished Grade 12 math.

Position Description
The Student Liaison Chair is responsible for
communications between the Western Canada Chapter and students in
graduate information professional or related programs at the local
universities. Students are encouraged to attend Chapter events and are
made aware of SLA events and offerings, such as the SLA Scholarship
Program and the Student Academic Relations Committee awards. In
particular, the student liaison chair supports the activities of the
local SLA Student Chapter(s) such as the one at the University of
British Columbia SLAIS.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Chair works closely with the UBC Student Chapter
and SLA WCC Directors to provide programming and services of particular
benefit to students.
