PRESENTATION

While librarians, records managers, and archivists have unique roles in their organizations, there are many shared skills, concerns and requirements. We want to take this opportunity to examine the areas of interest, to broaden our perspective, and to recognize job opportunities.

A panel of information professionals, who use the tools of both professions, will look at the factors that shape this convergence and provide examples based upon their work experience.

SPEAKERS:

Chris Plagnol, MLIS, CRM, Records manager for GVRD

Precis: Technology - as well as other factors -- has been a major change agent in the convergence of the "information professions". Increasingly, librarians, records managers, and archivists are working with other information professionals and technologists. Many have suggested that the distinctions between these groups are becoming blurred. Others suggest that requirements of each profession ensure uniqueness, but current realities suggest much common ground and shared objectives. This presentation will look at the factors that shape this convergence, and offer some examples of realities that are common.

Marnie King, MLIS, Assistant Records Manager, Information Management, VANOC

Shows how the cataloguing aspect of the MLIS can be applied to Records management - namely creating and developing a classification system.

John Horodyski, MLIS, MAS, Integration Producer, Electronic Arts

Precis: Digital Asset Management (DAM) provides a convergence for the two disciplines of archival studies and librarianship. In particular:

  • The access to valuable, archival assets needed for business operations and the classification and organization of those assets (metadata) for use by the business
  • The archival skill set provides insight to the management of records, and in particular digital media records (i.e. video, graphics), critical to business operations; knowing what is there now and being able to access archival records needed for future reference
  • The librarianship skill set is valuable for its organizational strategies and in particular, taxonomy creation and metadata analysis. Both of these provide insight to how to find the records, what they are and how they may be used.

Carol Williams, MLS, Manager, Records Management, BCSC & Deborah Copeman, MLS, Information Specialist, Knowledge Management Services, BCSC

Precis: Implementing an electronic document records management system (EDRMS) is change management in action. Promoting sound information management practices and raising awareness of services available are challenges for library and records management departments. At the BC Securities Commission, professionals in both areas are working together to implement EDRMS. Carol and Deborah will share their experience using the following change management tools:
  • Focus groups to understand user needs and compile requirements
  • Training opportunities to introduce and gain acceptance of a records retention schedule
  • A pilot project to test the document management system
