ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

This workshop will help your organization meet its obligations and mitigate its risks by providing practical information to improve your background research skills. The workshop will cover how to use research to:

  • support due diligence on company directors, officers, and new employees who are in a position of trust.
  • fulfill "know your client" and anti-money laundering obligations by learning more about clients' backgrounds, whether your client is an individual or a company.
  • support investigations, competitive intelligence, prospect research, and more.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

After attending the workshop, you will be able to:

  • develop effective research strategies tailored to your organization's assessment of the risk an individual or company presents.
  • identify specific research sources that will help mitigate risks.
  • resolve common research problems encountered in background research.
  • communicate results to the research requestor so that they can take action and preserve an audit trail.

PRESENTERS:

The workshop will be presented by Tracey Carmichael, Manager of Knowledge Management Services, and Deborah Copeman and Anne O'Shea, Information Specialists, British Columbia Securities Commission, who conduct background research on individuals and companies under investigation for alleged securities offences. Last year BCSC taught a companion course to investment dealers about know your client and employee due diligence research. The presenters will leverage a source guide which will be published on the BCSC website.
