About SLA Western Canada Chapter
Our Parent Organization
SLA is an international, non-profit
organization, providing support and services to information professionals
who share a common interest in the special library field.
Mission: To advance the leadership
role of our members in putting knowledge to work for the benefit
of decision-makers in corporations, government, the professions,
and society; as well as to shape the destiny of our information
and knowledge-based society.
Vision and Values: Our vision is to
be known as the leading professional association in the information
industry - a catalyst in the development of the information economy,
and a strategic partner in the emerging information society.
Our Chapter
The Western Canada Chapter was formed in 1985, and geographically
covers the four provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan,
and Manitoba, and the Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, and
Nunavut.
The Chapter offers its members professional development programs
and employment assistance, and actively builds awareness in the
community about the value of information professionals in their
organizations.
The Chapter has a Discussion List to
facilitate networking with other information professionals, as well
as a web journal, Wired West.
Geographical diversity contributes to our rapid adoption of new
technology and is also the force behind our distributed programming
with regional directors offering programmes reflecting local interests.
In 2000, we compiled a Chapter
history with highlights of the past fifteen years. Researching
our history also resulted in a variety of retrospective lists which
are available through the Archives
section.
SLA WCC also has a Strategic Plan
which helps direct the Chapter's services for the coming year.
We welcome your participation whether attending events,
contributing to Wired West or "lurking"
on our Discussion List.
If you would like to further develop your technical or leadership
skills in a non-threatening environment, contact our President.
