President’s Message
by Karen King, University of Virginia

We have so many great benefits that are a part of our SLA membership. I want to highlight one that I think is very helpful. The SLA website features an Online Library that has a vast selection of Ebrary e-books on topics including Leadership and Management as well as Knowledge Management. To access the collection, sign into the SLA website with your SLA User ID and Password (instructions on SLA website if it is your first time logging in). Then select Professional Development on the top toolbar. Then select Click University on the left side selection list. Choose the “learn more” option under SLA Online Libraries. Select one of the e-library collections and after a quick download of software you are able to browse the collection. It offers extensive access to information on topics that relate to libraries and information services. Check it out! Virtually! http://www.sla.org

In November 2007, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) renamed its headquarters library the Hume-Kauffman Transplantation Library and Archives to honor H. Myron Kauffman, Jr., M.D., FACS, who died in June 2007. Dr. Kauffman, who had been UNOS’ Medical Director and Senior Scientist, frequently depended upon the library in his research activities. The change aligns the names of two internationally acclaimed transplant visionaries. David M. Hume, M.D., was a pioneer in transplant surgery in the 1950s. Dr. Kauffman was Dr. Hume’s first Transplantation Research Fellow at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in the 1960s and they remained close friends and colleagues until Hume's death in 1973.

The Hume-Kauffman Transplantation Library and Archives was originally named the National Transplantation Resource Center when it was established in 1987. This special research library and archives focuses on informational resources for, and the history of, organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The collection includes books, audiovisuals, journals and newsletters generated by the scientific and clinical transplant community. Brochures, reports, posters and educational resources from many health care organizations are also included, as well as an extensive collection of reference materials in many formats on transplant-related subjects. The Library subscribes to online research databases and journals that point to significant findings and clinical evidence in the field. UNOS employs a full-time health sciences librarian to provide reference assistance to staff and external users, and to act as a resource to researchers and authors to help them find content in UNOS publications and other published sources. The Library also participates as a full member in the National Network of Medical Libraries (NN/LM) to further extend sharing of authoritative health information held by over 3500 libraries. For many years, Dr. Kauffman made frequent use of the service of interlibrary loan provided through this network while conducting his research. He also made suggestions for content for an extensive bibliography about transplantation that was compiled by UNOS’ librarian, Lorraine Sitler, MSLS, and published by the Medical Library Association.

Dr. Kauffman contributed some of the first items to UNOS’s transplantation archives, including early surgical and medical textbooks and a 1950-vintage kidney dialysis machine prototype (one of the world’s first). Upon her husband’s death, Dr. Kauffman’s wife generously donated more papers and materials from Dr. Kauffman’s extensive personal library. More information about the Hume-Kauffman Transplantation Library and Archives and its namesakes can be found on UNOS’s web site at http://www.unos.org/resources/libraryServices.asp.

A number of VASLA members met in Richmond on two evenings in March to enjoy good food and good company at Capital Ale House, Innsbrook. Read some of the reviews below:

I brought the family unannounced, at the last minute.  My son-in-law, who is applying for the MLS program at Catholic for the summer term, found it very informative.  I think he was surprised and gratified to realize what a variety of library jobs were represented in just that small group. ~Eleonore Spears

The VASLA Dine Around was my first taste of Capital Ale House.  The $1 burger night definitely fit my budget and it was a great burger.  For all you beer drinkers, I don’t think you could ask for a better selection.  We were in a back room with other patrons, but the noise level was minimal.  You were able to carry on a conversation without shouting.  We caught up on recent library events, talked to someone interested in joining the profession, and miscellaneous topics.  For someone who is unable to get away from the library much, this is a great way for me to keep in touch with local professionals face to face. ~Tina Noblitt

This was the first opportunity I have had to attend a VASLA dinner and I very much enjoyed having the chance to socialize with other librarians in the area.  As a UVA librarian, I found it especially interesting to meet librarians that work in other types of libraries and to learn about the specific issues they face in their areas. ~Tina Smith

A small group of VASLA members met at the Capital Ale House in Richmond for good food and drink and excellent conversation.  It was a wonderful chance to talk to people in a non-professional setting and get caught up on what is happening to everybody – both personally and professionally.  Much has been happening to special libraries around Virginia – and the country - due to the economy and it was one of the primary topics of conversation for the night.  We enjoyed our time with our VASLA friends and the camaraderie of the evening was worth the trip (the beer was a nice bonus too). ~Kathy Soule

It was wonderful meeting with a small group of VASLA members while enjoying yummy (and inexpensive) burgers, as well as the extensive beer selection at the Capitol Ale House. Conversation was interesting, as always, and it was a pleasure to spend time with someone exploring the opportunity to attend library school. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the evening as much as I did! ~Becky Carvajal

This was a great way to meet with fellow librarians—casual, affordable, and a change of pace from our business settings.  Capital Ale House was very accommodating in every respect!  We should try to have more events like these--in different parts of Virginia, at different restaurants, on different days of the week and maybe at different times of day.  I think that it helps the public to see us as more sociable people, while we have a fun evening out. ~Lorraine Sitler
