Student Shadows

Interested in networking with information professionals?
Keen to improve your public speaking skills?
Want to be published?

If you answered “yes!” to any of these questions, consider volunteering as a “student shadow” at the Friday, April 21 st UNYSLA Meeting in Buffalo/Amherst, New York. One library and information studies students will “shadow” each speaker. Shadows will introduce their speaker, sit with him or her at lunch, and write a short article for the UNYSLA newsletter. In addition, your registration fee will be waived.

NOTE: A limited number of shadows are chosen, so apply soon!

From the New York State Thruway - I-90 (Albany, NY):

Take the NYS Thruway I-90 West to Exit 50 (I-290). Take I-290 to the Millersport Highway North Exit. Continue on Millersport North to North Forest Road. Turn Left onto North Forest Road (Mobil Gas Station is on the corner) and 1/2 mile on the left is University Inn (just before the traffic light at John James Audubon Pkwy). Turn left into the driveway and continue to the Rotunda Entrance.

From the Buffalo International Airport:

Turn right out of the Airport Terminal Parking Area onto Genessee St. (Rt.33) and bear to the left. Stay on Route 33 until you see signs to I-90, New York State Thruway (approximately 1/2 mile). Speaker Biographies

Allison Evatt, one of the MLIS consultants appointed by Dialog, most recently was a consultant for an information services company in Atlanta, where she led a project to improve usage and functionality of virtual library and intranet sites at a Fortune 100 client.Previously, Allison was a research analyst for Egon Zehnder International, a global management consulting firm located in Atlanta, where she provided information and marketing services to support new business development. Another previous position was with Deloitte & Touche LLP, in Atlanta, where she served as information specialist and research analyst.Allison holds a master's degree in information sciences from the University of Tennessee, a master's in education from Georgia State University and a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University. She is currently the president of the Georgia chapter of SLA.

Dr. David Penniman is Dean of the School of Informatics at the University at Buffalo where he holds the rank of professor. He holds degrees in engineering and journalism from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in communication from the Ohio State University and has done advanced studies at the Gestalt Institute on organizational change and development. He is a registered professional engineer. His current research involves communication patterns among medical professionals exchanging tacit knowledge to reach consensus on treatment protocols. He has also done studies on knowledge management systems and cost/benefit analysis of information services. He has over thirty-five years of experience in the information field and has served as professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee, as acting director of the School of Information Sciences and director of the Center for Information Studies, an interdisciplinary research component of the University. He has served as president and CEO of the Council on Library Resources, was a director at AT&T Bell Laboratories, and was Vice President for Research at OCLC.

Practitioner Panelist Biographies

Thad Dickinson is currently Head of Reference and Access Services at Cornell University's Nestlé Library. His previous positions include Reference Coordinator and Business Bibliographer at Loyola University Chicago and Communications Librarian at the University of Texas at Austin. Much of Mr. Dickinson's professional activity has focused on the next generation of librarians, using his own experiences to provide guidance to those entering the profession and to engage senior librarians and administrators in how to retain new recruits. He earned his MLIS from UT-Austin in 1999.

Liz Evans is the Technical Services Librarian at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.  She received her MLS from SUNY Buffalo in September 2005 where she specialized in academic and special librarianship.  She has an undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo in Art History and Media Studies and completed all coursework toward an MA at the CUNY Graduate Center in Art History in 1996. Liz has worked in various academic and art libraries as well as in a visual resource collection, all in a paraprofessional capacity, including UB's Anderson Gallery in Buffalo, NY and an auction house in San Francisco.

Diane G. Schwartz , M.L.S., A.H.I.P., F.M.L.A. is Director of Libraries for Kaleida Health in Buffalo, NY and has held this position since 2000. Prior to joining Kaleida Health Diane worked in the School Of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo . Diane is Research Associate Professor of Medicine and Family Medicine at the University at Buffalo and an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Information and Library Studies in the School of Informatics . Prior to moving to Buffalo in 1992 Diane held several positions at the Alfred Taubman Medical Library of The University Of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Diane's M.L.S. degree is from Queen's College, City University of New York and her A.B. degree is from Douglass College, Rutgers University.

Student Panelist Biographies

Jennifer Graham holds a BS in Human Development (concentration in Cognitive Psychology, minors in Africana Studies and Native American Studies) from Cornell University and is currently pursuing a MLS at the University at Buffalo's School of Informatics. Jennifer has worked for over 12 years in the field of Social Work in not-for-profit community mental health agencies as Intake Counselor, and in various positions within Erie County Senior Services. Jennifer is enthusiastically looking for an academic library position in a small college where she can participate in multiple areas of librarianship, and would love to provide reference, though collection development calls on a daily basis, as do subject analysis, folksonomy and demographic research, and help non-traditional students find their niches.

Shannon Kealey worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as an administrator and at Fordham University Graduate School of Business as Recruiting Coordinator for Career Services before returning to school to complete a BA in English from SUNY Geneseo in 2005. After her MLS is completed, she will pursue a career in Academic Reference and Instruction. She is currently working as a Reference Assistant at the Health Sciences Library, where she enjoys projects in reference, instruction, and the History of Medicine collection.

JoAnn Lewis will be graduating with her MLS degree in May 2006, at which time she hopes to pursue one of her many interests in library and information studies. These include cataloging, electronic collections, digitization, web usability, competitive intelligence and knowledge management. In addition her original cataloging project for the Rochester Museum and Science Center's eighteenth and nineteenth century letter collection, she has also created a relational database for the Rochester Institute of Technology archives. She holds a BA degree in History and Sociology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

The Second Upstate Library Student Showcase

When: The SLA Upstate New York Chapter Spring Meeting, April 21, 2006
Set-up: 8-9 p.m., Showcase: 2:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Where: University Inn and Conference Center, Amherst, NY

Why: The Student Showcase is an excellent opportunity for students of the Upstate New York library and information studies schools to network with practitioners and interact collegially with peers. This is your chance to meet prospective employers, supervisors, and colleagues and show them what YOU have to offer.

What: The Showcase will consist of displays of student projects. Enter a poster, website, or other electronic display that:

Laptops may be used. Wireless internet access is available.

You must attend the spring meeting in order to have your project included .

To Participate
Any currently enrolled student at University at Albany School of Library Science and Policy, University at Buffalo School of Informatics, or Syracuse University School of Information Studies may participate.

Registration fees for attending the UNYSLA Spring Meeting will be waived for Student Showcase participants. (For a group entry, one member of the group will receive free registration.)
