What is the Special Libraries Association (SLA)?
The Special Libraries Association is an international organization of more than 12,000 members who work in special libraries serving business, research, government, universities, newspapers, museums and institutions that use or produce specialized information.
These special librarians are dedicated to supporting the goals of their organizations. They add value to the data they research, analyze, organize and package.
Special Libraries Association
provides opportunities for its members in the area of continuing
professional education and development, national conference, public
relations, networking, employment services and government relations.
Many professional publications are available, and all members receive
monthly the journal Information Outlook.
What is the Upstate New York Chapter?
The Upstate New York Chapter, a geographic chapter of the Special Libraries Association, covers the area from Buffalo to Albany. There are other chapters for the Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island areas.
Our Chapter benefits include a
quarterly bulletin, continuing education programs, local area meetings,
a discussion list, and professional networking opportunities. The
Chapter provides a consultation service for organizations that are
considering establishing a library or information center.
How do I join?
Membership applications are
handled by the headquarters office of the Special Libraries Association
in Alexandria, Virginia. Complete instructions are on the headquarters'
web site at http://www.sla.org/content/membership/joinsla/index.cfm.
All members may affiliate with one chapter and one division at no
additional charge. If you live or work in Upstate New York, join us!
How do I get involved in chapter activities?
Each Spring, a new Chapter board is elected. This is an excellent time to volunteer to help your chapter. There are many ways to get involved:
- participate in a committee such as Program Planning or Membership & Recruitment
- promote Chapter activities
- assist in fundraising or in seeking sponsors for upcoming programs
- contribute articles to the quarterly Bulletin (such as a profile of your library/information center and its collections or a topic of interest to information professionals)
- participate in the Mentoring program as a mentor to newcomers/students or as a mentee to connect with a seasoned professional
Let us know about your talents and ideas to support the chapter. Contact the Chapter President (http://www.sla.org/chapter/cuny/chapter/officers.html).
