Speaker Biographies

Penelope J.M. Klein is the Executive Director of the Central New York Library Resources Council (CLRC), a multi-type library consortium serving libraries in a four-county region in upstate New York . One of the state's nine 3Rs Library Councils, CLRC provides a myriad of services designed to help libraries serve their customers better. One of her current projects is to consider how CLRC can provide efficient delivery services to its membership.

Penelope received a B.A. ( summa cum laude ) in English Literature from the University of Minnesota and an M.A., Library and Information Studies, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a member both of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Phi Mu . She began her library career as a government documents librarian and has subsequently managed a branch library and been the director of a public library. Most recently, Penelope was the District Consultant Librarian for the Chester County Library System, an 18-library, federated public library system located near Philadelphia . The District Consultant is the liaison between the libraries and the State Library, responsible for administering state funding. Her many duties included organizing a project to implement downloadable audiobooks and creating a task force to consider the future of the bookmobile.

Penelope has taught several workshops on Outcomes-Based Evaluation. This fall, Penelope is again teaching an online course on public library administration for the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Library and Information Studies. She lives in Fayetteville , New York .


As University Librarian and Dean of the Libraries, Suzanne Thorin is responsible for providing outstanding services to the university's faculty and students in the areas of library information technology, collections, access, facilities, and advancement. In addition to her duties at the Libraries, Suzanne was recently assumed responsibility for the SU Press. A member of the Chancellor's Cabinet, Suzanne works in collaboration with other academic officers across campus.

Before coming to Syracuse University in October, 2005, Suzanne served for nine years as the Ruth Lilly University Dean of Libraries and Associate Vice President for Digital Libraries at Indiana University . During her nine-year tenure at Indiana University (IU), she began and nurtured the Digital Library Program (DLP), a partnership of the IU Libraries, University Information Technologies Services, the School of Library and Information Science, and the School of Informatics . The DLP at IU is among the top ten in the country and has been awarded nearly $5 million in grants. She also created a nationally recognized Information Commons, began a digital repository for faculty work, took steps to integrate digital library services with instructional technology, including Sakai , and planned a Research Commons for faculty members' research needs.

Dean Thorin's research includes documenting the history of digital library development in the United States and how the differences in ways that scholars work are influencing their use of technology. She co-authored with Daniel Greenstein, The Digital Library: A Biography ( http://www.clir.org/pubs/reports/pub109/pub109.pdf ), and she was instrumental in planning a recent ARL conference entitled, Scholarly Tribes and Tribulations: How Tradition and Technology are Driving Disciplinary Change ( http://www.arl.org/scomm/disciplines.html ), which explored the differences in the disciplines. Her paper, “Global Changes in Scholarly Communication” ( http://www.arl.org/scomm/disciplines/Thorin.pdf ), was a major resource for this conference and was published in eLearning and Digital Publishing by Springer-Verlag in April of 2006.

She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from North Park University in Chicago and master's degrees in music history and literature and in library science from the University of Michigan . Thorin was formerly a member of the Library of Congress staff for more than 16 years. At the Library of Congress, she served as Chief of Staff to the Librarian of Congress and as the official U.S. representative, appointed by the White House, for the G-7 electronic libraries project, one of eleven G-7 pilot projects for the Global Information Society. She was also responsible for the Library's National Digital Library Program.


Linda Bryan is the Associate Director for Organizational Development at Cornell University Library. Her professional background includes years of teaching, career counseling, training, and managerial experience in non-profit and academic settings. She holds a Masters of Professional Studies from Cornell University 's School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

Linda's current training and consulting efforts are focused on helping librarians and staff deal more effectively with the human side of change.  She is a certified facilitator of two innovative interpersonal skills development programs: Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When the Stakes are High" and William Bridges Leading Organizational Transition. Linda is also qualified administrator and interpreter of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
