Reference Librarian - Dallas - TX

Function:

The Librarian provides traditional and electronic information service to users of the McDermott Library. The incumbent participates with other librarians in designing research level reference service for the UT-Dallas community.

Scope:

Provides reference and information service to library customers (in-person, by phone, email, live chat, IM, text messaging, etc.). Participates in the evening and weekend rotation for desk service.

Participates in collection development and mainteneance of the reference collections.

Conducts formal library instruction sessions for groups or classes.

Collects and reviews statistics and makes reports as needed. Assigned special projects as needed.

Works with other reference staff members, both formally and informally, to share information and experience with patrons and materials, to discuss general reference and public service concerns, and to develop policies and materials to improve reference service.

Attends and participates in department, university, and professional activities and meeting to contribute to professional growth and competence. Engages in professional and scholarly activities through reading, conference attendance, and contact with faculty.

Creates marketing products for reference and library instruction services, including user aides and guides, PowerPoint presentations, blogs, Web sites for subject areas, and Camtasia Web Tutorials.

Assists customers needing to use accessibility and other special equipment.

Other related duties as assigned.

Supervision:

The Librarian reports to the Head of Reference Services and the Head of Information Literacy.

Education:

MLS from an ALA-accredited university.

Experience:

Two years of library experience in a public service capacity. Strong subject background in humanities/science/social science.  Strong written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to participate in a library instruction program.  Ability to evaluate, analyze, select, and recommend purchases.  Demonstrated experience with and understanding of the structure of standard online databases and search strategies. Familiarity with standard print reference sources. Comprehensive knowledge of standard application software.

The libraries of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio are seeking a Web Services Librarian to lead the development and management of the Libraries' web presence.

The Web Services Librarian coordinates the contributions of content from librarians across the organization to the Libraries' website, and manages the continual improvement of the site for optimum functionality, usability, currency and value. In addition, the Web Services Librarian plans web-related projects, coordinates with key developers and stakeholders throughout the University, helps to staff the Briscoe Library Information Desk, and participates in the Library's instructional programs.

Required education/experience: Master's degree in Library or Information Science, with two years of related experience. Additional qualifications: experience in Internet use, web design and usability; applied knowledge of standard web tools; applied knowledge of web standards and content management solutions; experience with database and web integration; excellent oral and written communication skills; supervisory and/or project management experience desirable but not required.
