What is SLA-CTOR?

The SLA Toronto Chapter's Discussion List (SLA-CTOR) is the electronic discussion group of the SLA Toronto Chapter. The Toronto Chapter has over 600 members drawn mainly from the Greater Toronto Area and other parts of Ontario, Canada. This list is to provide an electronic forum for discussion and communication among SLA Toronto members and information professionals in the community. It is open to all subscribers. As of December 2000 there were 575 subscribers.

Why should I subscribe?

The SLA Toronto Chapter's Discussion List will be your Toronto connection to information professionals. It will:

  • keep you informed about all upcoming Toronto chapter meetings and events
  • get you in the loop about SLA International events - conferences and accomodations
  • let you know the latest job openings in the information field
  • be a place to post your own "looking for work" notice
  • be a place where you can post help wanted!
  • be a group of people you can call on when looking for information - how to locate a special report, what others have done in preparing policies for the library or company, what others have experienced with specific software.

What should I post?

Items should be of interest to members of the Toronto Chapter of SLA. These might include:

  • discussions of topics of interest to information professionals and special librarians - everything from day to day problems to issues that pertain in an information society and the future of librarianship
  • announcements of Chapter meetings and other activities
  • sharing of Toronto SLA committee information
  • job announcements
  • looking for work announcements (put LFW in the subject line)
  • continuing education
  • member news
  • announcements forwarded from SLA Association Office or from other SLA Chapters/Divisions
  • important press releases from member vendors

Advertisements are not appropriate. However, notices of information sessions about products from SLA Toronto partners are welcome as are all educational programs related to information studies.

In May 2004, our policy was modified to permit press releases from vendors who are SLA Toronto partners to help subscribers stay up-to-date about new products. Partners are asked to keep the notice brief - just an excerpt with a link or other contact point for more information, and to space them judiciously so that members won't feel bombarded.
