"The Next Net Generation"

Generational change and the different behaviours of those younger and older folk who aren't exactly like 'us' is a continuing challenge for libraries and librarians. It's challenging us on many fronts - our users are changing; the demographics of our colleagues are changing; and the volunteer profile of our associations and networks are changing. We have a new imperative to understand these changes or we are likely to create one of the biggest Generation Gaps in history. Our speaker explores and reflects on the library challenges and opportunities of this unique period in generational demography. (There are three Canadians on the 2002 Library Journal Movers and Shakers list. The other two are also speaking: Cate McNeely, Session #801; Darlene Fichter, #1001.).

Custom Information Products - Creating Next Generation, Value-Added Services
Vicky Casey, Director, Content, Information Highways.

These are challenging times for librarians who deliver information services. On the one hand, many users who may formerly have relied on the library to meet their information needs, now routinely turn to the public Internet and to other services available at their desktops. On the other hand, these same users are suffering from information overload and may not be using the tools and resources available to them to best advantage. This workshop suggests new, value added information products as one solution to the challenge. It offers a new way for librarians to think about how they package, position and deliver services, and addresses approaches to providing user communities with the convenience of precise, relevant intelligence in formats that are customized for particular contexts.

Money Matters: Financial concepts to promote
Maggie Weaver, Principal, Shaftesbury Associates, Toronto.

Money matters: Financial concepts to help promote (or defend) your library. Management tends to see a library as a cost only, since benefits have hard to demonstrate in concrete terms. Learn to describe your library's impact on the organization in financial concepts that managers can relate to, so that they "get the picture" in their own terms.
