Reference Librarian
Public Law Library

East Bay, CA.


Under the direction of the Public Services Librarian, the Reference Librarian provides assistance and instruction to attorneys, the general public and others in the use of print, microfiche, and electronic resources of the law library, assists in promoting the services and programs of the law library and participates in other professional activities and projects related to the library. This position may involve some evening hours at the main library and some days at the branch library.


Responsibilities include:

  • Provide reference assistance and instruction to patrons of the Law Library;
  • Assist library patrons in the use of Westlaw, Lexis, Shepard's, Hein-on-line, Onlaw, other web and print resources;
  • Participate in the collection development process;
  • Write newsletter articles, book reviews, other articles, and promotional materials;
  • Prepare and conduct classes for library patrons;
  • Coordinate assigned library programs such as statistics, web page upkeep and more.
  • Supervise and/or backup circulation functions;
  • Attend professional training and development classes


Desirable Qualifications

Education:  Completion of a Masters Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution of higher learning and/or a law degree from an accredited law school, or a meaningful combination of education and work experience that would qualify one to work in a public law library setting.

General Requirements:

  • Knowledge of: principles, problems and practices of legal reference and research as they are related to law libraries, law books, publishers, periodicals, other legal reference material, and online research systems.
  • Availability for scheduled evening work or work at our branch as assigned.
  • Ability to skillfully and accurately perform legal reference duties at a busy public law library reference desk, to establish and maintain cooperative relations with others, to perform effectively and to utilize standard programs such as Microsoft Office.
