400th Anniversary of the Galileo Telescope: Presentation by Dr. Jim Mayo
When: Friday, July 31, 2009 from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Where: New Mexico Tech Campus in Socorro, NM
Joseph R. Skeen Library - Tripp Conference Room

The year 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of when Galileo Galilei first used a telescope to look into space. Galileo is often called the father of modern astronomy. Optical telescopes 400 years later, as represented by the Hubble Space Telescope, are 100 million times more sensitive than Galileo's telescope. While today's visible-light telescopes are far more powerful and adaptable, the underlying blueprint has remained the same since 1608. A telescope extends human vision by making distant things appear larger, sharper and brighter.

Jim Mayo's background in optics started in the 1950s, when he became interested in astronomy and photography. He attended the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona in 1967 on an Air Force Institute of Technology scholarship and graduated in 1968. After retiring from the Air Force in 1985, Jim joined R&D Associates in Albuquerque, which was later acquired by Northrop Grumman Corporation. Jim is senior opto-mechanical engineer and airborne laser program scientist for Northrop Grumman Information Technology in Albuquerque.

October 2009
Introduction to Taxonomies, Thesauri & Ontologies
When: Friday, October 30th 2009
Time: 8:30am—12:30pm (Lunch provided by SLA/ARMA Rio Grande Chapter)
Where: Access Innovations Offices in Albuquerque, NM
4725 Indian School Road NE , Suite 100

Taxonomies are the rage and Semantic Search is constantly talked about. What are the underpinnings supporting these technologies to make them work? How do you implement them? Are there standards for these things? Are there working installations we can see and emulate?

How do you use a taxonomy to index documents and web pages, where does the data go? Where do these fit into web search, portal navigation, Web CMS, archiving documents for fast and accurate retrieval?

This workshop will give an over view of the basic technologies and standards underlying taxonomies, thesauri and ontologies, and show how they relate to each other. Then we will explore where they fit in archive, storage and retrieval. At the end of the session, you will have a working knowledge of where they fit and how to implement them.

Presenters: Marjorie M.K. Hlava, Jay Ven Eman, and Alice Redmond-Neal

Cost: SLA & ARMA Members: $55.00 / Non- Members: $75.00
*Due to the deeply discounted fee of this workshop courtesy of Access Innovations, members of the SLA Rio Grande Chapter, student or retiree discounts are not available.
