Gender and Technology: Surprising Numbers and a Report from the Field, April 10, 2002 In addition to our knowledge of content, organization of knowledge, and information retrieval, librarianship has also become a profession very dependent on information and communication technology. Our work relies on information systems, knowledge systems, and networks, and we find that we are working more closely with those who have taken more traditional technology career paths: programmers, engineers, computer scientists, and managers of information systems who have graduated with business degrees. Today the library profession attracts more women than men in its ranks, but the number of women in technology fields is declining. As professionals who work with both information and technology, the following questions might come to mind: - What difference does gender play in selecting a professional field? - How can gender preferences help us work effectively on project teams? - How can we encourage and nurture young men and women who express interest in librarianship or technology work or both? Professor Claire McInerny will talk about these issues and related reserach at Rutgers on gender differences in technology. Wednesday, April 10, 2002
