Chapter Annual Meeting
Museum of History and Industry - May 21, 2003

Report from event

Becky Withington
Chapter President

From Renee:
Members of the Special Libraries Association Pacific Northwest Chapter (SLA-PNC) gathered at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) in Seattle for the annual meeting on May 21, 2003. With the museum's Seattle 1890 exhibition as a backdrop, Becky Withington began the meeting by sharing her heartfelt appreciation for all the help and counsel she has received as president of SLA-PNC this past year. The program included a vote for candidates nominated to the chapter's Executive Board positions (see below), presentation of chapter awards, a buffet dinner and a tour of MOHAI's library. The chapter recognized Maryanne Ward's professional accomplishments by awarding her with the Career Achievement award, presented by colleague Jean Sansobrino (photo below). In addition, a travel stipend to attend the SLA 2003 Annual Conference in New York City was presented to Donna Takeuchi, an MLIS student at UW by Grants & Awards committee chair Nola Sterling (photo below). Eight new members, including five MLIS students from UW's Information School, attended the event.

One of the evening's highlights was a tour of The Sophie Frye Bass Library given by Carolyn Marr, MOHAI Librarian, and Kathleen Knies, MOHAI Photographer. Marr displayed a variety of materials from the collection—including a Curtis First Edition, photographic glass plates brought to the area by early settlers and an opening program of The Fifth Avenue Theater. Opened in the 1950's, the library houses a collection of 1.5 million photographic images, 10,000 monographs as well as manuscripts, maps and ephemera. The library's mission is to collect and preserve information about the history of the greater Seattle area.
