The OKSLA-L mailing list is provided as a way for members of OKSLA to electronically communicate with a minimum of effort to other members. Please keep in mind a few guidelines to follow when using mailing lists:
One way to try to remember it is to imagine sitting with your best friend in a room full of other acquaintances. You might tell the group a funny story about something that happened to a family member on your vacation, but only your best friend knows which family member. Sending email to the LISTSERV@LISTSERV.OKSTATE.EDU address is roughly analogous to your best friend's knowledge of which family member you're talking about, while the OKSLA-L@LISTSERV.OKSTATE.EDU email address can be compared to the remaining people in this fictitious group.
Subscribing To Our Mailing ListThis is very easy to do:SUBSCRIBE OKSLA-L without any signature or other text, just the command above.
A (Very Brief) Primer on ListServ CommandsInteracting with the ListServ has very few parts. You can change your preferences by interacting with ListServ through email by sending mail to the LISTSERV@LISTSERV.OKSTATE.EDU address. It is basically made up of a command for the mailing list and a setting such ascommand <LISTNAME> settingFor example: set OKSLA-L digestwill cause you to receive email from OKSLA-L in digest form. "Digest Form" is a method where the ListServ saves messages for you until it has reached either a set period of time or an approximate number of lines of received mail. It then combines all the email into one easy-to-follow-along message. Conversely, sending set OKSLA-L mailwill cause you to receive email from other members of the group as it is processed. Another example is temporarily electing to not receive mail while not unsubscribing from the list (handy if you're going on a long vacation and won't have access to your email): set OKSLA-L nomailThe ListServ will not save any mail for you, it just removes your name from the recipients list without removing your account preferences. Finally, here is a command to get a handy reference sheet for the most commonly used commands in a ListServ environment: info refcardThis will send you a "cheat-sheet" of sorts with examples of how to use common commands.
