Does thinking about diversity in your library make you cringe? How well do
your collection and services meet the needs of your user
population? How
do you ensure that diversity is valued in your
organization? What strategies can be used to build
community within your organizational context?
Trevor Dawes, a founding member of the New Jersey
Chapter of the Black Caucus of the American Library
Association, and past chair of the American Library
Association’s Committee on Diversity, will share his
views on these topics.
He’ll address the importance of diversity in
libraries and offer a few suggestions as to how to
make the environment more welcoming and supportive.
Trevor A. Dawes is the Circulation Services Director at the Princeton
University Library, where he is responsible for the
circulation, reserve, stack, remote storage and
BorrowDirect (a rapid, unmediated book delivery service)
operations. He
previously held several positions at the Columbia
University Libraries in New York.
He has over ten years’ experience managing access
services departments in large academic research libraries
and has helped to develop new or enhance existing services
in each of his positions.
He has worked with staff in developing and
providing training for electronic reserve services; has
written on RFID technology in libraries; has co-authored a
publication on the organization and management of access
services and is editor of a volume on electronic reserves.
Mr. Dawes earned his MLS from Rutgers
University’s School of Communication, Information, and
Library Studies, and has two additional Masters Degrees
from Teachers College, Columbia University.
He is an active member of several library
professional associations.

Morris County Library
NJ/SLA is organizing another Networking Event, following the success of our March 29th meeting in Westfield. We will have time for introductions, a 30-minute presentation, group discussion, and end with some light refreshments. At the end of this event, if you think these are useful, we can continue to schedule similar meetings around the area.
What: We will continue to focus on our changing profession - coping today, preparing for tomorrow, and adapting for the future.
Where: Morris County Library, first floor conference room. The library is located in Whippany, just across from the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Directions at http://www.gti.net/mocolib1/compass.html
Bonus: Margaret Bennett, president of ProLibra Associates, will give an informal presentation with observations and insights on the changes she has seen in our profession, and where it may be going.
Who: To sign up, contact Claudia Cuca at cbc500@yahoo.com; tel (908)233-2535 from the present through May 21; after May 21, contact Susan Katz, susanekatz@att.net; tel. (973) 895-1194.
PS. If any members are attending the annual SLA meeting, which will be held in Seattle this year, would you be willing to share your thoughts in a summer get- together? In particular, if you are attending CE courses or sessions with specific skill set information, would you be willing to write those up for us? (i.e.: web design hints, better presentations on search results, CI/BI ideas, speaking with mgmt…).

Reality
2.0: Transforming Ourselves and our Association
How can we open up our associations? How can we convince tomorrow's members that SLA is valuable and worth a career-long commitment? Which technologies will help us prove and communicate our value proposition? Are there different ways to build community or to attract new community segments? Stephen Abram is 2008 President of SLA and a technology futurist and strategic technology innovator. He shares the top technologies causing change in our organizations and special librarianship. He defines a way of 'playing' with them and finding a way to make our libraries more open to our own learning, our host organizations, and fellow members. He'll end with five suggestions to enjoy change and have fun adopting new technologies.
