Does thinking about diversity in your library make you cringe? How well do your collection and services meet the needs of your user population?   How do you ensure that diversity is valued in your organization? What strategies can be used to build community within your organizational context?  Trevor Dawes, a founding member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, and past chair of the American Library Association’s Committee on Diversity, will share his views on these topics.  He’ll address the importance of diversity in libraries and offer a few suggestions as to how to make the environment more welcoming and supportive.

Trevor A. Dawes is the Circulation Services Director at the Princeton University Library, where he is responsible for the circulation, reserve, stack, remote storage and BorrowDirect (a rapid, unmediated book delivery service) operations.  He previously held several positions at the Columbia University Libraries in New York.  He has over ten years’ experience managing access services departments in large academic research libraries and has helped to develop new or enhance existing services in each of his positions.  He has worked with staff in developing and providing training for electronic reserve services; has written on RFID technology in libraries; has co-authored a publication on the organization and management of access services and is editor of a volume on electronic reserves.  Mr. Dawes earned his MLS from Rutgers University’s School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies, and has two additional Masters Degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.  He is an active member of several library professional associations.

Stephen Abram's Blog

Reality 2.0: Transforming Ourselves and our Association

How can we open up our associations? How can we convince tomorrow's members that SLA is valuable and worth a career-long commitment? Which technologies will help us prove and communicate our value proposition? Are there different ways to build community or to attract new community segments? Stephen Abram is 2008 President of SLA and a technology futurist and strategic technology innovator. He shares the top technologies causing change in our organizations and special librarianship. He defines a way of 'playing' with them and finding a way to make our libraries more open to our own learning, our host organizations, and fellow members. He'll end with five suggestions to enjoy change and have fun adopting new technologies.

Special Libraries Association Continues Dialogue with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Library Closures

SLA Obtains Clarification from EPA Surrounding Recent Media Reports on Closures

The release is posted on sla.org here: http://www.sla.org/content/SLA /pressroom/pressrelease/07pr /pr2712.cfm.

Alexandria, Virginia, USA, 9 May 2007—  In a continuation of the dialogue between Special Libraries Association (SLA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), officials from both organizations met on Monday in an effort to clarify recent media reports that libraries were closing and materials discarded within the EPA’s regional library network. The meeting, called by SLA, was the fourth between the two organizations which have been in communication since February 2006 about EPA’s future plans concerning the operations of its network special libraries.

“SLA has been diligent in reaching out to EPA officials, getting status reports, and sharing the expertise of our members, and we will continue to work closely with EPA on this issue. Our meetings have been open and informative, and we appreciate that EPA is responding to SLA’s concerns and giving our members a voice as the agency implements changes to its operations policies and procedures within the regional library network,” said Janice Lachance, CEO of SLA.

During an April 6 meeting at SLA Headquarters, Mike Flynn EPA Director, Office of Information Analysis and Access Office of Environmental Information told SLA that further closures and changes to EPA library network have been “frozen” as the agency works to develop and implement policies and procedures, as well as goals and a strategic direction that would best serve the needs of the public and EPA scientists.

Flynn confirmed in a letter on May 8 to SLA that this was indeed still the case, “I assure you that we are working diligently toward the goals I have discussed with you. EPA is committed to increasing access to environmental information through a combination of online and traditional library services via the EPA Library Network.”

Flynn will appear in person to address the recent reports as well as share future plans with SLA members in three weeks at the 2007 SLA Annual Conference, 3-6 June in Denver, Colo.  He is scheduled to provide a status update on the EPA’s plans for its library network on Tuesday, 5 June, 2007 9-10:30 a.m. as one part of SLA’s Public Policy Update.

Be a Dinner Buddy!

Have you ever attended a function and knew absolutely NO ONE in the room?  You try to not act like a wallflower.  Perhaps, you slowly walk near a group of people waiting for someone to talk to you.  Without knowing it, you have successfully studied the intricate pattern of the Oriental rug  that you are standing on.  It is a situation that we all can relate to.

Yet, it would all be different if one had a "dinner buddy" to meet at the function and sit with during dinner.

You can help a meeting's first time attendee feel welcome by being their dinner buddy for that particular meeting.

Being a dinner buddy does not require you to fill out a lot of paperwork, (except for the registration form of course) no report to submit, no need to give up your first born-just pleasant dinner conversation with someone who is attending one of our chapter meetings for the first time.

On the bottom of this meeting's (and future meeting's) registration form(s), you will see "Would you like to be a buddy to a first time attendee?"  I encourage you to check off that box and welcome a new face to our chapter's meetings.  Remember, it was not too long ago that YOU were a new face to the chapter.

NJSLA Programs are a great learning and networking opportunity.
