Letter from the President,
November 2003

Happy Holidays, NCSLA members! The North Carolina Chapter of Special Libraries Association has had an interesting and busy year.

In February, more than 130 special librarians participated in seven "neighborhood networking" events around the state. Many of you took the time to tell me how much you enjoyed the informal, local networking opportunities and are looking forward to doing it again.

We had almost 70 people attend the annual awards banquet at the Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park in April. We honored Dr. Fred Roper with the Meritorious Achievement Award and Deborah Balsamo with the Horizon Award. In addition, the Information Management Award was presented to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Library and Information Science.

President-elect Erin Knight arranged for our October meeting to be held at the North Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro. "Negotiating with Library Vendors" was the topic for the day and we were fortunate to hear from four insightful and informative speakers: Carlton Brown, Nancy Gibbs, Selden Lamoureux and Rebecca Vargha. As a bonus, SLA's dynamic new Executive Director, Janice LaChance, attending the meeting and spoke during lunch.

We also started participating in SLA's Virtual Seminar series more regularly this year. Chapter members came together to view "An Organic Approach to Project Management" in April, "Information Research Strategies" by Barbara Quint in May, "Branding Master Class" by Chris Olson in September, and "Business Planning: Building the Plan and the Buy-in" by Jane Dysart and Rebecca Jones in December.

2004 should prove to have even more opportunities for us to network and learn from each other. Please take a moment to mark the following activities on your calendar:

·         January 23, 2004 at Dialog in Cary

·         April 29, 2004 at the Museum of Life & Science in Durham

Erin has arranged to have a very special annual meeting, dinner and awards ceremony on International Special Librarians Day. Cynthia Hill, president of SLA, will be our guest speaker for the event.
