  • Jennifer Klimas will be joining the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism as the Director of Research Administration in February 2007.

 

December 2006

  • The library staff of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center is pleased to announce that Susan Corbett has joined them as Director of Library and Information Services. Susie received her MSLS from UNC in 1981. Most recently, she was the systems librarian for the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences in Birmingham, Alabama. Previously she served as the Director for Information Resources at Wake AHEC in Raleigh and in a variety of positions at East Carolina University Health Sciences Library. Most of her professional association involvement has been with the Medical Library Association, but she has recently joined SLA and looks forward to meeting fellow NCSLA members at our chapter events.   • Diana Chike, who recently received her MSLS from UNC, has joined CIIT Centers for Health Research as the assistant librarian.


March 2005

  • On March 1st, NCSLA members Mike Crumpton and Tamika McCollough conducted a resume workshop with students at North Carolina Central University's Student SLA chapter. Eight students attended the workshop in which real life experiences dealing with cover letters, resumes, interviewing skills and professional development activities were discussed. This workshop was organized by Emily Reaser, refreshments were served and it's hoped the information shared will lead job candidates to future successes.

December 2005

  • Cindy McCracken has been hired permanently as a user experience designer for Motricity, a provider of mobile content solutions and services for the wireless industry.

  • EPA/NIEHS intern and NCSLA member Emily (Lanning) Reaser has been appointed co-president of the student chapter of SLA at NC Central University, joining a group of EPA/NIEHS interns who are active members of local student chapters. Rebecca Pappert is treasurer and Jillian Tanner is vice president of the UNC student chapter. Other EPA/NIEHS intern NCSLA members include Diana Chike, NIEHS; Jason Sokoloff, EPA; Kimberley Bugg, EPA; and Jessica Gibson, EPA.

  • David Sullivan, the senior associate for research services at the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC-Chapel Hill, just earned his 5 years of state service award.

  • Rebecca Vargha, president-elect of the Special Libraries Association, was a panelist in a discussion entitled, "Uniting Education and Practice: Preparing Students for Tomorrow's Workforce" on Monday at UNC's School of Information and Library Science. Other panelists included Leslie Burger, president-elect, American Library Association; Dr. José-Marie Griffiths, dean, School of Information and Library Science, UNC at Chapel Hill; and Dr. Irene Owens, dean, School of Library and Information Science, North Carolina Central University.

October 2005

  • Terry Hill has taken a position as a customer representative for North America for HARRASSOWITZ, a book and serial vendor for the academic and research library community specializing in the distribution of scholarly books, periodicals, e-resources and music scores. He will be covering the Southeast and Southwest.

  • Jack Hurd is the new manager for Wachovia's Information Resource Center. Hurd assumed his new role in February of this year. Hurd received his master's of library science and his master's of arts in teaching (history) from the University of South Carolina. Before coming to Wachovia, Hurd was assistant director of Library Services at Alston & Bird, L.L.P. Previously, Hurd was law librarian for Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough.

  • Emily Inge has been promoted to manager of Knowledge Services at Campbell Alliance.

July 2005

  • Connie Childers has been promoted to senior information specialist at the Lorillard Research Library in Greensboro.

  • Mike Crumpton has been elected vice president/president-elect of the North Carolina Community College Learning Resources Association. The organization's conference next year, to be July 26-28, 2006, at Wake Technical Community College, will be a good networking opportunity for students.

  • Jack Hurd is the new manager for Wachovia's Information Resource Center. Hurd assumed his new role in February of this year. Jack received two master's degrees - in library science and teaching (history) - from the University of South Carolina.   • At the CIIT Centers for Health Research, Erin Knight has been promoted to manager, information resources and communications. Jessica Rubis has been promoted to librarian/graphics specialist.

  • Karin Shank joined the North Carolina Biotechnology Center's Library and Information Services staff on Aug. 16, 2005. Shank has a bachelor's degree in biology, a master's in crop science and botany, and a master's in library science. She has worked at the Rex Healthcare Library, North Carolina State University Libraries and, prior to attending library school, BASF Plant Sciences, L.L.C.

  • Rebecca B. Vargha has been promoted from associate librarian to the full rank of librarian at UNC-Chapel Hill.
