The second annual NC/SLA Officer Inauguration and
Silent Auction will be held on November 15th, 2007 at Brier Creek Country Club.
The theme for the evening will be “Out of Africa." The keynote speaker will be
SLA President Rebecca Vargha, presenting on “Gems from South Africa: What's
Happening in the Library World.” A buffet dinner will be served and we will
again host a silent auction. The evening will culminate with the appointment of
our 2008 NC/SLA Officers. This will be the final event for this year and we hope
many of you will join us for this fun-filled evening. Watch for registration
information in the coming weeks...
Staffing changes at
the EPA-RTP Library: April Errickson, the prior EPA-RTP Library
Director and UNC contractor, moved into a new position as the Federal Library
Manager for the EPA-RTP Library. This position was vacated by Deborah
Balsamo who became the EPA Library Network National Program Manager. The new
EPA-RTP Library Director is Tamika Barnes McCollough who comes to the
library from North Carolina A&T University. Please join us in congratulating
three of our local librarians for their recent
promotions.
Zotero
If
you're looking for an easy way to manage your online research, you might want to
give Zotero a try. "An extension to the
popular open-source web browser Firefox, Zotero helps you gather, organize, and
analyze sources (citations, full texts, web pages, images, and other objects),
and lets you share the results of your research in a variety of ways". Keep in
mind, it only works with Firefox 2.0; if you have an older version installed,
you will need to download this version: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Scholarly Communication: Science Librarians as Advocates for
Change
http://www.istl.org/07-summer/article2.html
This
article, by Elizabeth C. Turtle and Martin Courtois, suggests ways that science
librarians can help to promote scholarly communication and support expanding
access to scientific information. The authors provide a list of web sites to
help librarians become familiar with current developments and issues related to
scholarly communication. Their suggestions include incorporating some aspect of
scholarly communication into your job, being a role model by publishing your own
work in open access journals, identifying substitutes for high-cost journals in
your discipline, and encouraging faculty/researcher publishing in open access
journals.
