The Maryland Chapter of SLA Invites You to Their Premier 2008 Program

Visual Delights! Special Collections of the National Agricultural Library

Take a guided tour of the recently renovated Special Collections of the National Agricultural Library and browse its latest exhibits while networking with colleagues and enjoying refreshments. The program includes a buffet dinner and presentation by Susan Fugate, Head of NAL Special Collections, with everyone taking home a high quality reproduction print as a memento of the evening.

The National Agricultural Library and its Special Collections is a treasure-trove of priceless botanical prints and historical agricultural artifacts, including extensive collections of seed and flower catalogs richly illustrated with 18th and 19th century colored lithographs. These and hand-painted watercolors from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine will be viewed during guided tours, as well as other elegant, classic drawings and paintings in themed exhibit displays. The evening is set to be a visual feast for the eye!

Guided tours of the Special Collections area will be conducted at 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00pm. While not on a tour, you are invited to network with colleagues in the Library’s first floor atrium, browsing displays while enjoying wine and light appetizers.

The dinner buffet begins at 6:30pm with a welcome from Peter Young, Director of NAL, and featuring an illustrated presentation by Susan Fugate about the Special Collections and its unique materials, including Thomas Jefferson correspondence and the expedition notes and photos of plant explorers and collectors.

Everyone will be given a high quality reproduction print of the Curtis’s Botanical Magazine hyacinth used to illustrate the evening’s program. The NAL gift counter will be open during the program and illustrated items will be available for purchase at an exclusive, event-only discount.
