Kentucky
Chapter member leads the way
By Susan Brown, Public Relations/Diversity Leadership
Development Committee Chair
When the going gets tough, the SLA Kentucky chapter gets going. That's just what happened when President Bush gave the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) zero funding in his proposed 2006 budget. Chapter member and current secretary, Stacey Greenwell, stepped forward. As a result, NHPRC's request advocating additional funding is the first "action alert" on the SLA website! Thanks to the efforts of Kentucky librarians, the Council of State Historical Records Coordinators (COSHRC) has named Kentucky a model for other states to follow.
This struggle is important to Kentucky: we've received more than $2.1 million in funding to support well-known projects like KYVL, the Kentucky Local Records Grants program administered by KDLA, the publication of the Henry Clay Papers at UK and Louis Brandeis and D.W. Griffiths publications at U of L.
NHPRC money has also been given directly to institutions to preserve and process important collections, including UofL's microfilming of The Louisville Defender, the Filson Historical Society's preservation of important Kentucky manuscripts, KDLA and the Kentucky Historical Society's microfilming of Governor's recordsfrom 1792 to 1927, and UK's preservation of photographs from the Lexington Herald Leader.
Without this important funding, Kentucky history would fade from knowledge. If you are interested in helping, explore the following websites and fax your representative.
A message from our Student
Chapter President
- Submitted by Elizabeth Smith, President, UK SLA Student
Chapter
Greetings KY-SLA Chapter members!
Tammy Kirk, our co-president, graduated
in December, so Im now the lone president for the group. All of us at
the UK-SLA Student Chapter send Tammy our thanks for her for her contributions
as well as our congratulations on the completion of her degree! Jacqueline Goins,
our mentoring liaison, is working with the KY-SLA chapter as a member of the
awards committee - its a wonderful opportunity for one of our students
to become actively involved with the larger SLA community!
Our semester began with a presentation about SLA during the SLIS new-student
orientation, which outlined the benefits of the association and encouraged new
students to join. This spring, weve decided to focus on resources here
on campus and to emphasize the importance of special academic libraries, so
were arranging visits to the agriculture, equine, and law libraries here
at UK. Were also targeting speakers who might share their knowledge about
alternative careers for librarians. (If youre interested sharing your
experience with us, please contact student chapter president Liz Smith at xanadu_85@hotmail.com).
We have a busy semester planned, and we hope our activities will encourage more UK-SLIS students to consider career opportunities in special libraries. Before I sign off, I want to send a big Thanks! to Professor Joe Miller, our faculty advisor; our tours and programs wouldnt be possible without his guidance.
Mastering the Art of Information Sleuthing - Session report
Assisting
pro se patrons - Session Report
- Submitted by Mary Vass,
President-Elect
Our Kentucky State Law Librarian, Carol J. Parris, recently presented a lively and informative talk entitled "Assisting Pro Se Patrons: Legal Research for Non-Law Librarians." Pro se patrons, or lay people doing their own research on the law, often strike fear in the hearts of librarians who fear crossing the line between information professional and legal advisor.
Carol walked us through some basic
legal resources and established guidelines for helping non-law librarians understand
the kind of help they can provide. Her "Crash Course in Kentucky Legal
Research" ofers an overview of materials that might be helpful to patrons,
and covered the legal websites essential for libraries with little or no legal
reference material. Her most valuable piece of advice: "Tell your pro se
patron to contact an attorney!"
