Introduction
The Iowa Chapter has established an honorary title of "Friend of the Iowa
Chapter."
A Friend of the Iowa Chapter shall be someone who has had a significant
positive impact upon the Chapter by mentoring members or students, donating
services, money, or time, sharing a powerful vision for change, or having
an impact upon the direction in which the Chapter develops. To suggest
an individual or organization for the Executive Board's consideration
as a Friend of the Iowa Chapter, members should contact the President.
Procedures
The honorary title "Friend of the Iowa Chapter" can be bestowed
by the Executive Board with a majority vote.
Any Chapter member can nominate someone for the honor of Friend of the
Iowa Chapter. A Friend of the Iowa Chapter shall be someone who has had
a significant positive impact upon the Chapter by mentoring members or
students, donating services, money, or time, sharing a powerful vision
for change, or having an impact upon the direction in which the Chapter
develops.
Chapter Members can nominate a Friend by sending the nominee's name,
library affiliation, and information supporting reasons for the nomination.
A Friend of the Iowa Chapter will receive a certificate of thanks and
appreciation from the Chapter, will be recognized at the Chapter's Web
site, in its newsletter, on the Chapter's email list, and at a meeting
following the announcement.
Adopted: May 21, 2004
Recipients
Esther L. Bierbarum - Friend
of the Iowa Chapter
At its meeting on May 21, 2004, the Executive Board bestowed the Chapter's
first "Friend of the Iowa Chapter" title on Esther L. Bierbaum. Esther,
who is a Professor Emeritus of Library and Information Science at the
University of Iowa, is now retired and lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.
She has been a member of SLA for over 20 years and was the advisor of
the SLA student group at UI from 1985-1996. She taught the special libraries
course at UI and a number of our Chapter members were her students. Esther
also mentored many Iowa special librarians. Esther spearheaded an effort
some years ago to establish an Iowa Chapter of SLA, but the effort failed.
Esther then was instrumental in founding the Special Libraries Round Table
of the Iowa Library Association. The certificate naming Esther a "Friend
of the Iowa Chapter" says: "With thanks and appreciation for many years
of support and inspiration for special libraries and special librarians
in Iowa."
Jo Pearson - Friend of the
Iowa Chapter
At its meeting on May 21, 2004, the Executive Board bestowed a second
"Friend of the Iowa Chapter" on Jo Pearson. Jo was formerly librarian
at CMF&Z in Cedar Rapids. However, because of downsizing, Jo now finds
herself working at the Cedar Rapids public library as a reference librarian.
As chair of the ILA Special Libraries Round Table, Jo took the lead in
establishing the Iowa Chapter. She also served as its first Membership
Chair and the membership almost doubled during her tenure (from 25 members
to 48). Her goal is to see the membership at 50 before her term expires
at the end of June, 2004. Although Jo has been an SLA member for almost
20 years, because of her career change Jo has decided that SLA membership
is no longer an option for her. The Iowa Chapter will miss her leadership
and enthusiasm. The certificate naming Jo a "Friend of the Iowa Chapter"
says: "With thanks and appreciation for your leadership and hard work
in establishing the Iowa Chapter and for building the Chapter's membership
by doing an excellent job as the Chapter's first Membership Chair."
