Patent Search Strategies at Linda Hall Library
On May 12th 2008 at 3:30 p.m. at the Linda Hall Library,
Michelle Lahey, a 20+-year-member of SLA and reference librarian at Linda Hall,
will present a talk on patent search strategies.
Linda Hall Library is a US Patent and Trademark Depository
Library (USPTDL). Every year it sends librarians for training on the latest
techniques of patent searching. In the past several years, as more of the
resources of the Patent and Trademark Office have become available on the
Internet, the USPTDL has made several changes in its recommended search
strategies.
Come to
Linda Hall Library,
located at 5109 Cherry Street in Kansas City, and learn how this impacts your
patent searching. A lively discussion is sure to follow the program.

The SLA at SLIM group has arranged an event at the KU
Spencer Library in Lawrence, Kansas. Karen Cook of the
Department of Special Collections will speak on the
library's special collections. This will be a great
opportunity to get together and meet with some of our
student members, while touring a truly wonderful library at
the same time!
Please reply to
Jennifer
Cook, the Programs Officer for the SLA at SLIM group, if you
are able to attend. Jennifer needs to get a ballpark figure
on attendance in order to plan for refreshments.

FROM THE
PRESIDENT'S DESK
Lu Dayrit
Inside HOA, members
of the Executive Board and Committee Chairs have met several
times since June 2004. Significant to our meeting agenda was the
carrying out of HOA's strategic goals and objectives. To have
that 'flow' in HOA membership, we visited several ESU SLIM and
UMC SISLT classes. During these visits, we shared our
experiences and encouraged students to join us... and I see that
it is surely working.
Our membership is
continually getting stronger, what with the addition of two
Librarians from Shook, Hardy, & Bacon Library, who recently
joined us. I am pleased to let you know that Shook Library is at
the top of HOA membership list, with seven Librarians.
As few of us in the
Executive Board are completing our terms, it is significant to
let you know of our accomplishments during our annual business
meeting.
Annual business
meeting - the event that I am hoping you will attend. I would
love to meet all of you ; our members from Washburn, K State,
American Institute of Baking, KU, GCSAA (Golf Course Supt Assn
of America) and others outside of Kansas City, may I encourage
you to join us for this get-together : May 12th, 5:30 - 9:30/10
pm at Ritz Charles, Overland Park. There will be lots of
networking, good food, and great speech by Ethel Salonen, SLA
President. Ethel will be coming from Boston and will be our
guest from May 11-14th. She will speak on 'Managing leadership :
yours and those you lead'. Details of the event will be sent by
Gail Kammer, Program Chair.
Dr. Cathy Perley,
our Director of Student Relations and SLA@SLIM Faculty Advisor,
has finalized Ms. Salonen's schedule of activities. She will be
visiting Linda Hall Library, UMKC Miller Nichols Library, Sprint
Corporate Research Center, Kansas City Public Library, Federal
Reserve Bank of Kansas City Research Library, Shook Hardy &
Bacon Library and Hallmark Cards Libraries.
We hope to see you
or meet you then in the next few weeks.

FROM THE
PRESIDENT'S DESK
Lu Dayrit
Hello SLA HOA
members, I am pleased to let you know that we have success
stories in assisting our student members prepare for their
carreers. I am thanking everyone's support in making HOA a
dynamic organization.
Few weeks ago, I
informed you of Christine Barrett's internship at CARL in Fort
Leavenworth that led to her full-time position as a Reference
Librarian.
I'd like to share
with you the appreciation from two other student members.
I heard from Scott
Curtis. Last summer, Scott completed internship at Linda Hall.
Recently, he accepted a job offer for a Reference
Librarian/Search Services Coordinator position at Linda Hall. If
you remember, Scott made a presentation during our annual
business dinner meeting last May. He was the Past President of
SLA@SLIM, our student group at the ESU SLIM. Scott hopes to
attend our programs this year now that he is in KC!
A note from Scott :
" I must thank you and HOA for providing me with Mary Moeller as
a contact at Linda Hall for my practicum. My employment offer
can be traced directly to the positive experiences I had during
this practicum. Without your help and the support of HOA, I may
not have realized the opportunity I now enjoy."
I also heard from
Darrell Willoughby. Darrell was one of ESU SLIM students who was
always there when it comes to volunteering during the programs.
With his attendance during HOA programs, he made our
conversations lively. He had great stories ! Darrell worked at
the ESU Newman Nursing Library then at the Olathe Medical Center
Library. I received this note below from Darrell few weeks ago.
Here's what he says
: "Hi Lu, My practicum experience at the University of Nebraska
Medical Center School of Medicine (McGoogan Library of Medicine)
in Omaha last February paid off for me. I have been working as
the Library Services representative for the VA Medical Center
since the first of the year! I work for the university. They
have a contract with the VA. Thanks again for your sponsorship
of the SLIM students. I will always remember the tours and the
dinners. Darrrel".
Hopefully, you
remember these students. HOA is indeed proud of them!
My hope in sharing
you their notes is to continue strengthen our relationships with
our student members or even non-members. I encourage everyone to
open your doors to our students when they request for
observational practicums; when they have questions or when they
may need to interview you for their papers... or when they are
looking for libraries of their interest to get a feel of the
'real world' in librarianship - what it is like to be a law
librarian, advertising librarian, medical librarian or what is
it like to be a solo librarian, reference librarian ... or an
information professional in a non-traditional library setting or
information broker, just to name a few of the experiences we
have in this membership.
