The lovely Waioli Tea Room in beautiful Manoa was the setting for the Hawaiian-Pacific chapter's 2004 Annual Business meeting on May 21st. The "Ginger" room provided a cozy setting for a lovely repast of signature Waioli Tea Room specialties (served buffet style!), and students from the Library & Information Science Program and Department of Information & Computer Sciences provided a stimulating, post-meeting program. Organized once again by our programming chair, the incomparable Terese Leber, chapter members enjoyed a social hour and serve-yourself dinner, followed by a quick business meeting and "changing of the guard." The student presentations that followed offered a fascinating glimpse into what the library school curriculum has to offer these days. Gwen Kushiyama's discussion of the design and creation of a resources database for the Hawaii Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, was an example of a final project for the LIS 674 Database Design and Creation course. Suzanne Uratani and Asako Shiba ably presented their project from the LIS 672 Library Automation course, which culminated in a proposal for the digitization and automation of the UH Art Department Slide Collection. Suzanne continues to work on this project, despite the end of the course. Leslie Wood, Xin Chen, and Zuzana Hlavackova gave a tag team presentation of their project with the Hawaii Independent Physicians Association, completed for the ICS 691 Information Architecture class. The team will repeat their performance this fall at the annual meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology in Providence. All three student projects provided a chance for budding information professionals to work on real needs with real community entities, and get a grade and three credits at the end! All three presentations gave chapter member much to applaud, and something to think about for their own libraries. |
