Les Dames d'Escoffier Gift

By Diane Sakai

The Hawaii Chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier, a culinary professional women's international organization, recently gave a generous gift of $30,000 worth of culinary books and educational videotapes to several UH libraries. Recipients of the gift include Kapiolani Community College, Kauai Community College, Leeward Community College, Maui Community College, Windward Community College, University of Hawaii Center-West Hawaii, and the University of Hawaii-Hilo/Hawaii Community College. The gift was made in memory of Heather Ho, a former Hawaii resident and prominent pastry chef at the Windows of the World Restaurant in the World Trade Center. She was a victim in the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Heather was a graduate of Punahou School, Boston University, and the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. She had worked at some of the finest restaurants in San Francisco and New York City.

The gift represents more than 800 professional books and videotapes selected by the college librarians and the organization. Subjects include all aspects of food preparation, chefs, and recipes. Each library submitted a wish list of titles to build or round out their collections and received a core of favorite titles selected by the organization. The generous gift has given a boost to each library's culinary collection and major support to the students and faculty in each college's culinary program.
