Eugene Garfield Speaks
By Susan Johnson
October events for the chapter also included an afternoon with
Dr.Eugene Garfield, the founder and chairman emeritus of the Institute for
Scientific information. Held in the Library & information Science
program classroom at the University of Hawaii on October 7th, Dr. Garfield
spoke to a mixed crowd of library school students and other information
professionals. Known as the father of citation indexing, Dr. Garfield
regaled the audience with bibliometric tales of past and present ,
about the use of citation analysis in rapidly emerging fields of inquiry,
and about about his latest project, the HistCite software. The lecture was
videotaped, and will be made available for viewing in the future. Thanks
to Dr.Peter Jacso and his online searching class for opening the lecture
to the public, and the student chapter of ALA, who co-sponsored the
afternoon with the Hawaiian Pacific Chapter of SLA.
