Transforming Libraries:  The "Real" Barriers to Reinventing Ourselves

Tyler Walters
Associate Director, Technology and Resource Services
Georgia Institute of Technology Library and Information Center

"Transforming" libraries is something we hear much about these days. New technologies, electronic resources, digital preservation, portals, and new learning spaces are just some of the focal points of this "revolution." We feel we know what the goal is: to provide access anytime/anywhere to information for our end users and to weave information seamlessly into the fabric of our organizations' programs and processes. These changes produce other changes, namely shifts in the work behavior of librarians and library staff in order to achieve the digitally "transformed" library. Today's talk will focus on how we must "transform" who we are in the workplace in order to really transform libraries into the modern "digital hub" and "knowledge center" we want them to become.
