Advanced Web Searching:  Tips and Techniques

Information professionals of all stripes navigate the open Web to find information and to lead users to useful answers. Search engines continue to add new features and content at a dizzying pace. The Georgia Chapter of the Special Libraries Association would like to help its members get a better grip on the latest search trends and to compare search engine features with a free 90-minute lecture by the noted Web-search guru, librarian and author Greg Notess.

Topic: "Advanced Web Searching: Tips & Techniques"

Session Synopsis: Explore new and unusual search capabilities of the primary search engines used to navigate the Web. This lecture exposes advanced Web-search strategies and techniques. With a focus on Boolean, adjacency, field searching, limits, and other special features, Google is compared with Yahoo!, MSN Search, Ask.com, Live.com and other specialized databases.

Speaker: Greg R. Notess is the founder of Search Engine Showdown <http://searchengineshowdown.com> and an award-winning author. A consultant and frequent conference speaker, he also works as a reference librarian at Montana State University.

In recent years, Greg has spoken at many conferences including: Internet Librarian, Computers in Libraries, SLA Annual Conference, Web Search University, as well as at events in Montreal, Stockholm, London, Copenhagen, Sydney, Zagreb, and India.

Greg is a three-time Information Authorship award winner and writes the "On the Net" and "Internet Search Engine Update" columns for ONLINE magazine. His latest book -- "Teaching Web Search Skills" -- was published in August 2006 by Information Today Books.
