Tour of
Smithsonian Libraries Book Conservation Lab

WHAT:  The Smithsonian Libraries Book Conservation Lab is the site of a tour for the DC Chapter of SLA. The Smithsonian Libraries Book Conservation Lab and the Preservation Services Department provides support to the 20 Smithsonian Libraries locations in the DC metropolitan area, New York City, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama.

The Preservation Services Department is responsible for: 

  • General collections care program to maintain the circulating collections of the SI Libraries
  • Special collections treatment to provide conservation treatment for rare/special collections items
  • Assesment and preparation of materials for exhibition and digital reformatting
  • Consultation with library staff on preservation related issues

WHEN:  Wednesday, November 17, 11:00am-12:00pm

WHERE:  1111 North Capitol St. NE, a 10-15 minute walk from Union Station. From the intersection of Massachussetts Ave and N. Capitol, turn away from the Capitol building and walk past the GPO buildings, Gonzaga High School, and the Kaiser Permanente building.  Look for the big, white, warehouse building, just after Kaiser, on the right side of the street.  Sign in at the security desk in the lobby. A picture ID is needed for entry. A Library staff person will be in the lobby to greet everyone and escort them to the library.
