DC/SLA members and guests are invited to join the Military Librarians’ Group of DC/SLA for a tour of President Lincoln’s Cottage located on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in northwest Washington, DC. Renovation on the Cottage was recently completed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, making this site available to visitors for the first time. Abraham Lincoln and his family lived at the cottage for a quarter of his presidency–from June to November of 1862, 1863 and 1864. Walking in his footsteps, visitors gain insights into the crucial decisions made while living in this country retreat, the “Camp David” of those days. The cottage grounds are lovely, so weather permitting, consider coming early and enjoying a picnic lunch before your tour. Families are welcome, but the tour is not recommended for very young children. Stairways in the house are quite narrow and the cottage is not handicapped accessible, so the tour may also be difficult for those with mobility challenges. |
