Open Access Movement
Thursday - April 6, 2006

Did you miss the event?

WHAT: Join DC/SLA as we bring two international Open Access experts from Toronto and New York to speak at the annual International Special Librarians Day, Thursday, April 6th.

WHAT IS OPEN ACCESS?: Open Access refers to free availability of scientific and scholarly research texts on the public internet both to industrialized and developing countries; This movement began in 2001 with the Budapest Open Access Initiative which sought to remove cost and other barriers for access to scientific and scholarly journal literature. The panel of experts will discuss the OA movement, its origins, achievements and goals, including benefits for libraries, scholars, and industry in developing and industrialized countries.

For an overview of Open Access, see: http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/overview.htm

WHO: Speakers include:

  • Dr. Leslie Chan, Associate Director of Bioline International, and Program Supervisor for the Joint Program in New Media Studies and the International Studies program at the University of Toronto
  • Melissa Hagemann, Program Manager, Information Program, Open Society Institute of the Soros Foundation

Our "drop-box" will be available for collecting library, information, and computer journals for donation to library schools adopted by the DC/SLA Chapter. So, start TODAY by saving your reading material and bring it with you on April 6th!

Please join DC/SLA for this exciting event and learn how the Open Access movement helps to open the doors of access to scientific and scholarly information for people worldwide.
