Donations to the Knower Fund will also be accepted. Beverly M. Knower worked as a librarian at the Sun Oil Company and was active in SLA. The memorial fund honors Beverly's interest for support of students. The Knower Fund supports students who wish to explore areas of special librarianship by subsidizing their opportunities to attend meetings with special librarians, attend relevant conference or training and get acquainted with SLA.

SLA Central Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Joint Chapter Meeting - Hershey, PA - August 1, 2008

Sponsored by IEEE

The Central PA and Philadelphia Chapters held a joint meeting in Hershey at Events Etc. by The Hershey Pantry. We had a joint business meeting where we discussed the potential merger of the two chapters, then we had a presentation on "Ehtnobotanical Uses of Cacao in Mesoamerica. Or, Take 2 Kisses and Call Me in the Morning" by the Hershey Company’s Dr. W. Jeffrey Hurst. Following the presentation we had a chocolate tasting, and then lunch.

Fall Chapter Meeting - University Park, PA - November 8, 2007

Our fall chapter meeting was held at the Population Research Institute on Penn State's University Park campus. We had a presentation called "Library 2.0 - Practical Uses for Blogging, Social Networking and Online Virtual Worlds." Tara Murray talked about blogging, Andrew Calvin (Penn State University Libraries) spoke about social networking, and Beth Transue gave us a tour of Second Life. The presentation was followed by our business meeting and lunch at Zola New World Bistro.

Chapter members met over lunch at McNees, Wallace and Nurick in Harrisburg to discuss SLA recommendations about merging chapters and the future of SLA-CPC.

Glenn McGuigan, Tara Murray, Amy Paster, and Peggy Ross from our chapter attended the Leadership Summit, which, for the record, actually took place in Sparks, NV.

Fall Meeting - Lancaster, PA - October 26, 2006

“What is Competitive Intelligence? Why Should We Care? Learn About The New Buzz Word Circulating in All Types of Libraries” The chapter met at the Lancaster Public Library Business Library for a program on competitive intelligence and our annual business meeting.

Summer Chapter Picnic & Baseball Game - State College, PA - July 28, 2006

Chapter members brought their friends and family to the new ballpark to watch the State College Spikes battle it out with the Auburn Doubledays. The Spikes lost 4-3, but the weather was perfect, the hot dogs were plentiful, and the fried Twinkies were interesting. A good time was had by all!

May Chapter Meeting - Enola, PA - May 9, 2006

The chapter meeting was hosted by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center in Enola, PA. Before the meeting, SLA President-Elect Rebecca Vargha spoke to chapter members about the roles of librarians, recruitment and training, and SLA. After the chapter business meeting, we toured the NSVRC center facilities, including the library, and met many of the staff, who spoke very highly of librarian Beth Transue.

Fall Chapter Meeting - Bellefonte, PA - October 25, 2005

We met on an unseasonably snowy day at the American Philatelic Research Library (APRL) in Bellefonte. Librarian Gini Horn gave a presentation and tour of the APRL (including the Tongan Tin Can Mail), and then we had a cozy lunch at the Gamble Mill.

Summer Chapter Meeting: Take Me Out To The Ballgame - Harrisburg, PA - June 23, 2005

The chapter summer meeting was held at the Commerce Bank Park, City Island, Harrisburg. We enjoyed a picnic lunch, and then watched the Senators get a win.

Spring Chapter Meeting - Harrisburg, PA - April 7, 2005

We met at McNees, Wallace & Nurick in Harrisburg, where Peggy Ross was our gracious host. Carol McQuiggan, Instructional Designer and eLearning Support Specialist, Penn State Capital College, presented "Building Effective Teams: Virtually or Face-to-Face". After the meeting, we had dinner at Stocks on Second.

SLA Leadership Summit - Tampa, FL - January 26-29, 2005

Chapter members Deb Lovett, Jennifer Cessna, and Tara Murray escaped the central PA winter for a few days with other SLA leaders in Tampa. Tempting as the weather was, we stayed inside the summit hotel for a packed schedule including the chapter and division cabinet meetings, a leadership development workshop, and a variety of informative sessions presented by SLA's staff and association leadership. At the end of our stay in Tampa, the city was invaded by pirates.

Fall Chapter Meeting - University Park, PA - November 16, 2004

The chapter met on an unseasonably warm, sunny day at Penn State's University Park Campus. Following lunch and our business meeting, Betty Jo Hibberd from Dialog presented a Quantum2 leadership program, "Achieving Results through Relationships: The Power of Influence".

The CPHSLA (Central Pennsylvania Health Sciences Library Association) invited our chapter members to attend a teleconference sponsored by the Medical Library Association.

May Chapter Meeting - May 21, 2004 - University Park, PA

Our May chapter meeting was held at Penn State's University Park campus. We elected our chapter officers for 2004-2005 at the business meeting. After the meeting, we enjoyed lunch at the Allen Street Grill, across from campus, and then toured Penn State's Special Collections Library and Preservation Lab.

March Chapter Meeting - March 12, 2004

Our March meeting and 25th anniversary celebration was hosted by the Joint State Government Commission in Harrisburg. We had our anniversary luncheon at Parev Restaurant. After lunch, past presidents Virginia Lingle and Sandy Wood spoke about their experiences with the chapter, and Paige Andrew read a statement from Mel Westerman. Founding member Bob Seeds was also recognized. Our presentation was "Database Licensing: The Basics", by Becky Albitz of Penn State. Following the presentation, we toured the Joint State Government Commission library, and then walked across the street to the State Museum and Archives to view the annual exhibition of William Penn's Charter.

SLA Leadership Summit - Albuquerque, New Mexico - January 22-24, 2004

The Leadership Summit offered a unique chance to get to know SLA's leaders--at national, division, and chapter levels--and to develop leadership skills.

Winter Meeting - December 12, 2003

Our winter meeting was hosted by MapQuest in Mountville, PA, and our theme was geography. Highlights included a tour of MapQuest's library, including their new license plate collection, and a presentation by Joe Baker: "Mapping the Past: The PENNDOT/PHMC Cultural Resources GIS Project".

Fall Meeting - September 12, 2003

Our fall meeting was held at Penn State's University Park campus. Registration was a treat in and of itself, including a display from our archives, courtesy of chapter archivist Amy Paster, and baklava and other goodies from Copernicus Bakery in State College. Stephen Woods, Social Sciences Librarian Specializing in Data & Government Information at University Libraries, gave a presentation on government information resources, fugitive documents, digital documents, and the depository library program. We ended the day with a tour of Penn State's new All Sports Museum, where we learned about a lot more than football. Did you know Penn State's original colors were black and pink?

SLA 2003 Annual Meeting - New York City - June 7-12, 2003

The Big Apple! At the annual business meeting, SLA members voted to retain Special Libraries Association as our organization's name. See SLA's news release and message to SLA members. SLA also announced the appointment of Janice LaChance as the new executive director.

May Meeting - May 9, 2003

Our May meeting was held at the Penn State Harrisburg Library in Middletown, PA. Our program speaker, Dr. Hal Shill, Director of the Capital College Libraries, presented results of research just completed on his sabbatical. His presentation was entitled, "Does the Physical Library Have a Future? Evidence from New, Expanded and Renovated Libraries." Glenn McGuigan, our new Chapter President, gave us a tour of the Penn State Harrisburg Library.

This was also our offical annual business meeting, and we voted in our new officers for the 2003-2004 term. Congratulations to our new (and continuing) officers!

March Meeting - March 14, 2003

Our March meeting was held at Hershey Foods Corporation Technical Center, and featured a presentation by our own Margaret Ross, Information Center Manager of McNees, Wallace and Nurrick LLC, on searching for legal information. Our kind host, Jennifer Cessna, Past President of our Chapter, gave a tour of the Information Analysis Center and, of course, candy for everyone.

December Meeting - December 13, 2002

Our December meeting was held at the Staff Library for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the
State Museum of Pennsylvania in downtown Harrisburg. Neela Ved, Cataloging Librarian of the State Library of Pennsylvania, gave a presentation on "Cataloging Internet Resources". Paula gave us a tour of the Staff Library in its new space, and we got a chance to browse the state bookstore and the museum gift shop. Curator Curt Miner also gave us a tour of the Levittown exhibit (complete with a pink 1950's kitchen!). You can see the pink kitchen under construction and with its former owner in the Bucks County Courier Times articles about the exhibit.

October Meeting - October 4, 2002

Kevin Harwell, Associate Business Librarian at Penn State, University Park, gave a presentation on searching for patents, and some interesting background information about patents. We also had a tour of the Population Research Institute's Library and Data Archive.

May Meeting - May 16, 2002

Peggy Ross and the law firm of McNees, Wallace, & Nurick in downtown Harrisburg, PA hosted our May meeting. SLA-CPC member Quinn Koller of Library Associates gave an excellent presentation on coaching and mentoring, and Peggy gave a tour of her library.

March Meeting - March 14, 2002

MapQuest.com hosted the March meeting. Craig Haggit gave a tour of the map library, so no one had any excuse for getting lost on the way home...

2001/02 Mid-Winter Conference - Chicago, IL - January, 2002

Nothing like visiting the north-country in ... January?? The Windy City is hosting this year's winter conference, which focuses on developing current and potential leaders within SLA. This year's mid-winter meeting was a tad more contentious than others, but offered an exceptional chance to take an active part in the association's future.

Winter Meeting - December 11, 2001

Several guests from the Pittsburgh Chapter joined us at the new National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg. Two of their members are running for national office this year. Lynn Berard is running for SLA President, and Barbara Spiegelman is running for a Director's position. They gave us a taste of what we can expect if they succeed in their bid for office.

Also included in this meeting was a guided tour of the museum, which was introduced by a both entertaining and informative Larry Keener-Farley. Elayne Goyette, Museum Archivist, gave us a rare insider's look at the archives area, not usually open to the public.
