A more detailed chapter history is in the works, but in the meantime the chapter chronology gives some highlights of our 20-plus-year history.
December 1, 1978
Deadline for returning petition
for the formation of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Special Libraries
Association.
February 3, 1979
SLA Board voted to approve a provisional Mid-Pennsylvania
Chapter at the SLA Winter Meeting in Tucson.
April 6, 1979
First organizational meeting of the Central Pennsylvania
Provisional Chapter of SLA held at the Green Gables Restaurant. Interim officers
were elected:
- Chairman: Mel Westerman
- Vice Chairman: Sandy Wood
- Secretary: C.J. McKown
- Treasurer: Del Sweeney
- By-Laws: Mim Pierce (Chair), plus the four officers
- External: Linda Rambler (Chair), Eunice Roe, Bill Woodruff, Mel Bennett
- Internal: Susan Bianchi (Chair), Jane McFall, Cheryl Sandusky, John Sleeman, Bob Seeds
September 28, 1979
The membership approved the By-Laws.
June 10, 1980
Installation reception at the Park Suite, Grant Washington
Hilton, Washington, D.C. Sponsored by Disclosure, Inc., Brodart, Inc., and Wert
Bookbinding, Inc.
May 12, 1987
Acceptance of a long range plan for 1986-1989.
August 1988
Chapter Archives transferred to the Pennsylvania State
University.
May 15, 1989
10th Anniversary Dinner at the Nittany Lion Inn. Mim Pierce, as
after dinner speaker, spoke about the chapter then and now.
March 1990
Continuing Education Course: "Winning Marketing Techniques"
October 11, 1990
Acceptance of a long range plan for 1990-1993.
November 1990
Visit by SLA President-Elect Guy St. Clair.
March 1991
Continuing Education Course "How to Work Smarter".
April 1992
Continuing Education Course: "Maximizing Customer
Satisfaction"
December 1993
Continuing Education Course: "U.S. Copyright and the Age of
Technology"
April 1994
15th Anniversary Dinner Nittany Lion Inn, State College, with
special guest SLA President-Elect Didi Pancake.
1995
SLAPA listserv is started, located at Pennsylvania State
University.
September 1997
Continuing Education course "Building the Corporate INTRANET
Knowledge Center".
Fall 1999
CPC/SLA has a home on the web www.sla.org/chapter/ccna/index.htm
Fall 1999
First Bylaws changes since 1979 are voted on and approved by
the membership. Awaiting formal approval from SLA Headquarters.
May 2000
20th Anniversary Dinner at the Whitaker Center for Science and
the Arts, Harrisburg, PA. Special guest speaker is SLA President-Elect Donna
Scheeder.
2001
The Chapter received a certificate from SLA in recognition of
being a Founding Donor of the David R. Bender Endowment Fund for International
Development.
2002
The Chapter participated in the SLA Twinning Project. We are
sponsoring Denisa Parkosova from the Czech Reupblic for a two year
period.
