This Betty Burrows Memorial Seminar is offered by the Cleveland Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, in memory of Elizabeth Burrows, a Cleveland Chapter member from 1947 to her death in 1971. A generous gift from her husband, William C. Burrows, with other memorial funds given by her friends and colleagues, has been used to establish the Betty Burrows Memorial Fund. This fund helps to further on of Bettys long-term concerns, the education of special librarians.
Betty Burrows received her M.S. in Library Science from the University of Michigan. She began her career on the staff of the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland as a cataloger and then joined the Alcan Aluminum Corporation where she organized a special library. A member of the Special Libraries Association for twenty-five years, Betty Burrows was an active member and officer of the Cleveland Chapter. She served the Business and Finance Division as Secretary and Treasurer, and the Association as Chair of the Scholarship and Student Loan Committee. As an appropriate memorial to Betty, the Cleveland Chapter intends to continue this education series.
The Program
Simply having access to information is not enough for those seeking to turn data into useable knowledge. In fact, anyone whos tried to use the World Wide Web is fully aware of the difference between data, information and knowledge and has sought to sort their way through this complicated maze. Information professionals are poised to take the lead in knowledge management for their respective organizations, as well as on the Web because they are uniquely qualified to effectively manage the knowledge of both their organization and are able to extend their expertise to the organization of the Web. The speakers scheduled for the 25th Annual Betty Burrows Seminar plan to address the skills and abilities we will need to successfully manage the knowledge needed by our customers and ourselves.
