Social Networking Tools Inside the Organization

This introductory seminar will take a snapshot look at Web 2.0 social networking tools including blogs, wikis, RSS, feed aggregators (e.g. Google Reader), tagging and social bookmarking (del.icio.us). These are rapidly becoming essential parts of the librarian's toolkit for communication and building community. Don't be left behind! Learn what they do, what their main features are, and how they can be used inside the organization.

Preparing to Make a Business Case
March 19 Hosted by Presented by Maggie Weaver, Principal, Shaftesbury Associates. Library staff are expected to be able to produce a "business case," or rationale, for proposed expenditures. Attendees will work through the research necessary to construct a business case, including: cost benefits, finding champions for the cause, and structuring an effective request for funding. Attendees also will get tips for the actual words to use — focusing on the goals of the organization and speaking in the language of their audience.

Introduction to Institutional Data Repositories
February 20 Hosted by Biogen Idec Presented by Michael Witt, Interdisciplinary Research Librarian, Assistant Professor of Library Science, Purdue University. This seminar will use institutional repositories as a backdrop for learning and applying basic data curation concepts. Participants will explore a rationale for archiving and sharing data and a role for librarians in collaborating to address the data deluge. We will examine current, general-use data-sharing services such as Swivel and Freebase, as well as a variety of specific disciplinary and institutional data archives and projects. Participants will be able to determine if an institutional data repository is appropriate for their organizations and get tips for starting one.
