SLA Boston SLA Boston presents
The Nominees for 2008

Dorothy Barr, President-Elect Nominee
Although I am a relatively recent (2004) graduate of Simmons GSLIS, I have two other master’s degrees, three children, two small grandchildren, and have worked in many different jobs through the years. My first professional position after library school was at UMass Med School in Worcester, and in May 2007 I started at the Ernst Mayr Library at Harvard. There I work with the Molecular & Cell Biology and Organismic & Evolutionary Biology Departments, a position that combines my experience and interests. As a student at Simmons I joined all the professional organizations (mostly for the free food at events) and found SLA to be the most exciting and rewarding. I look forward to working with SLA friends both old and new in these exciting times.

Alex Caracuzzo, Treasurer-nominee
Alex Caracuzzo is Associate Head Librarian at MIT’s Dewey Library for Management and Social Sciences. He is Past-President of the Rhode Island Chapter of SLA and is teaching Special Library Services at the University of Rhode Island GSLIS this fall. Alex has held previous special library positions at Fidelity Investments Institutional Services, Albany International Research Co., and the Kirstein Business Branch of the Boston Public Library. He is married with two children and lives in Warwick, RI, where he also manages and plays for an over-30 indoor soccer team that is soon to notch its first victory.

Alan Thibeault, Director of Strategic Planning-nominee
Alan Thibeault is the Chief Librarian at the Boston Herald, a position he has held since 2005. Prior to that he served as the Herald’s Assistant Chief Librarian and as a Library Associate. In between stints at the Herald, he was the training coordinator for IME Systems in Dedham, MA. Before becoming a librarian, Alan served 10 years in the U.S. Army as a field artillery officer, serving at both stateside and overseas asignments. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont in 1982 where he majored in criminal justice and English. Alan earned an MSLIS from Simmons College in 1997. He has previously chaired Boston Chapter's Student Relations Committee and served a two-year term as Treasurer.

Judy Blaine, Secretary-nominee
I've been an SLA member since 1991 when I was a student at Simmons (with four young children at home - we used to study together at the dining room table). After getting my degree in 1992 I cut my library teeth at the Northeastern U. reference desk for a few months before joining a small biotech company where I established the library and furnished information services as a solo for over five years. I then moved to ArQule, another biotech, started their library, and managed it (again solo) for almost 10 years. I'm now looking at health care from a whole new angle as the information specialist at a tiny, but increasingly influential non-profit organization, Silent Spring Institute, which focuses on women's health and the environment. Within SLA I've been active in the Boston chapter, serving on the board in various capacities over the years. I'm also active in the Pharmaceutical & Health Technologies Division, where I am about to become chair-elect. And yes, Heather Blaine, a Boston chapter member, is my daughter.

Tara Breton, Communications Chair-nominee
Tara Breton is currently the Senior Information Specialist for a healthcare consulting firm in Weston, MA. She joined the firm in 2003 after 8-years with another strategic management firm, L.E.K. Consulting located in downtown Boston. She has previously served as the Program Chair for NENON, has published multiple articles in Searcher magazine, and has spent the last year as the Boston Chapter’s Webmaster.
