JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: LIBRARY/MEDIA SERVICES TEACHER
STARTING DATE: September 2, 2008
WORK YEAR: l85 Days
SALARY: In accordance with the negotiated contract, which is based on education and experience.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction and supervision of the Principal.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Plans, implements, supervises, instructs and provides leadership in all phases of a secondary school library/media program.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Understands characteristics, uses and design of information systems, for standard reference sources and appropriate technologies.
2. Select, acquire, organize, manage and maintain information resources.
3. Appropriate equipment for using information resources.
4. Develop, organize, manage and evaluate school library media programs and resource center.
5. Select literature for young adults.
6. Select, adapt and produce instructional materials.
7. Follow federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to media, including those governing access to and reproduction of materials.
8. Understand and develop ethical standards affecting library media sources.
9. Identify and use community and governmental resources.
10. Select, order, catalog, issue and maintain books, periodicals, and other reference material.
11. May teach and/or assist other staff in the teaching of library utilization and research skills to vocational high school students.
12. Prepare, in conjunction with the principal, yearly budget requests and supply purchase orders for the library.
13. Coordinate, supervise and encourage the use of a modern library facility and its resources.
14. Train and supervise volunteer library workers.
15. Work independently or jointly with others at tasks assigned by the principal.
16. Participates in professional development activities that align with school-wide educational goals.
17. Update professional skills by attending conferences, meetings, workshops, and other professional development and related career training activities.
18. Join professional organizations.
19. Develop goals and activities relative to professional development.
20. Perform other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
GENERAL:
1. Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a caring, positive and constructive manner and specifically with students, teachers, school administrators, parents and volunteers.
2. Must have and maintain impeccable moral standards.
3. Must be neat and clean in appearance and personal habits.
4. Dependability in attendance and productivity. Perform high quality work consistently. Exhibit a positive work ethic.
5. Be a role model for students and the general public at large.
6. Demonstrates confidentiality in personnel and student matters.
7. Demonstrate a proficiency in handling problems as they arise and to know when and to whom to assign the handling of situations in the absence of an administrator.
8. Ability to work independently as well as a team with other staff members.
9. Must possess a valid driver's license.

SPECIFIC:
1. Certification as a secondary school librarian/media specialist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
2. Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Library Science or related fields.
3. A knowledge and understanding of all phases of managing a library in a small high school.
4. The organizational skills needed to manage all aspects of the inventory purchasing, issuing and maintenance of a wide variety of library equipment and supplies.
5. Student management skills and the ability to work with all staff and students to insure the proper utilization of library facilities, equipment and software.
6. Must be computer literate.
7. A working knowledge of high tech media equipment is desirable.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
BENEFITS:
15 sick days annually, 3 personal days, funeral and other leaves. Health and Dental Plans are available with the County paying 80% of premiums. A $4000.00 life insurance policy is a package deal and goes into effect at the same time as the Blue Cross-Shield.

REPRESENTATION:
Norfolk County Agricultural High School teachers are members of the American Federation of Teachers. An agency service fee is a condition of employment.

POLICY:
Finalists are subject to a criminal record check, which is satisfactory to NCAHS.
