The Houston Academy of Medicine -Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library, one of the largest academic health sciences libraries in the world and the Regional Medical Library (RML) for the NN/LM South Central Region, has retained C. Berger Group, Inc. to fill the position of Associate Director, National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region

The mission of the NN/LM SCR is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by providing all U.S. health professionals equal access to biomedical information and by improving the public’s access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health in the five state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

(NN/LM) South Central Region (SCR) Associate Director is a unique position in the way that the individual provides three different services for each of its distinct client bases.

For the NLM and NN/LM SCR the Associate Director coordinates activities with other coordinators, NLM representatives, state-based NN/LM SCR Regional Advisory Committees (RACs), Resource Library Directors, and other Network members. This includes budgeting and monitoring established budgetary goals and objectives; maintaining relationships with members; overseeing the development and implementation of programming for the five state region; approving development and delivery of education courses; participating in exhibits, classes, and all aspects of grant writing and funding applications. The Associate Director also works with the NLM and other RMLs in developing, disseminating and maintaining the Regional Emergency Preparedness Plan.

As a supervisor, the NN/LM SCR Associate Director oversees a staff of coordinators who are responsible for implementation of the NN/LM SCR programs. The Associate Director is responsible for the overall operations including the recruiting, training, supervising and evaluation of all its staff; providing personnel with clear directions and priorities with emphasis on quality standards, service and team work.

As an HAM-TMC employee, the NN/LM SCR Associate Director works closely with the Executive Director to establish goals, policies and objectives for both the SCR and the Library as a whole; collaborates with members of other departments; provides assistance and support to librarians and staff when needed and completes all activities towards the fulfillment of the Library mission.

Requirements for the position include a MLS from an ALA-accredited institution and a minimum of eight years progressively responsible library experience, including planning and budgeting within a supervisory role. Knowledge of the South Central Region, its information needs, and a familiarity with the NLM’s programs is highly desirable. An additional graduate degree in the health services or experience in an academic health center environment is highly desired; demonstrated professional commitment, either through relevant professional organization activities, publications, or instruction; successful fund-raising experience and/or grant writing are especially desirable.
