The Houston Academy of Medicine -Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library, one of the largest academic health sciences libraries in the world and the Regional Medical Library (RML) for the NN/LM South Central Region, has retained C. Berger Group, Inc. to fill the position of Associate Director, Information Services.

The Associate Director provides leadership and direction to the Information Services Department consisting of biomedical librarians engaged in education, outreach and reference/information services to the Texas Medical Center (TMC) institutions. The Associate Director is responsible for the overall operations of the Information Services Department including the recruiting, training, supervising and evaluation of all its staff; participates in strategic planning, program development, outreach and other issues related to the Library’s future; develops education activities, including orientations, workshops, classes, Grand Rounds; oversees the Consumer Health and Public Relations Programs and investigates and implements new technologies to promote effective reference services. The Associate Director, Information Services also oversees and strengthens the print and electronic reference collections, working closely with the Collections Management Department regarding use, access and support and consults with and educates clients about access to and use of the information.

The HAM-TMC Library was founded in 1949 with the merger of the Houston Academy of Medicine and Baylor College of Medicine. Today it is one of the largest academic health sciences libraries in the world. With a staff of over 60 persons and a budget exceeding eight million dollars, the Library serves the Texas Medical Center’s more than 40 member institutions including two medical schools, four schools of nursing, 13 renowned hospitals and two specialty institutes. Currently, the Library contains 76,500 square feet of space, and holds over 362,000 book and journal volumes Additionally, the Library has subscriptions to over 100 electronic databases and over 6,000 electronic journals.

The HAM-TMC Library also serves as the Regional Medical Library (RML) for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region (NN/LM SCR); one of eight RMLs in the US. This designation has been retained by the Library via a competitive process through the National Library of Medicine, since 1991. The mission of the NN/LM SCR is to provide all health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and to improve the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health in the five state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Requirements for the position include a MLS from an ALA-accredited institution and a minimum of five years progressively responsible library experience, including planning and budgeting within a supervisory role. An additional graduate degree in the health services or experience in an academic health center environment is highly desired; demonstrated professional commitment, either through relevant professional organization activities, publications, or instruction; successful fund-raising experience; and experience with Friends of the Library programs and/or grant writing are especially desirable.

Starting salary is $65,000 to $75,000
