President's Message

Carla Smith . . .

Greetings, AZ SLA Chapter members!

As incoming President, I want to welcome all of our members to a new year. I'm thrilled to begin my term and am looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can. We can all expect quality programs, plenty of networking opportunities, a great newsletter, and an informative website.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our incredible chapter volunteers: the officers and committee chairs who are working behind the scenes to keep the chapter running smoothly. They all lead busy lives with many demands on them, but I think if you ask them, they will say that the investment of their time in the Arizona Chapter has been worth it.

Kudos to everyone who has agreed to serve on this year's team. Your energy and enthusiasm are sure to make this another banner year for the Arizona Chapter!

Now a few Chapter updates:

Membership Survey: Thanks to your participation, we achieved an incredible 42% return rate on our 2000 Membership Survey. If you have not already looked at it, the results have been posted at http://www.sla.org/chapter/caz/memsurvey.html . Many thanks to incoming Chapter Treasurer, Lori Critz, for getting this project off the ground!

Strategic Plan: Under the leadership of chair, Karen Holloway, the Strategic Planning committee met on August 18th. We are considering all the input from the recent survey to create a Strategic Plan that will meet the needs of the membership and help strengthen the Chapter.

Committee Chairs: We welcome several new faces to our committees this year. Employment Chair: Bill Johnson; Networking/Tucson: Jim Martin; Archivist: Wes Rader; Public Relations, Lori Critz.

Programs: Beki Welsch, current President-Elect/Program-Chair has been working hard this summer to line up top-quality programs for the coming year. The first one is scheduled for September 27th: look inside this Bulletin for more details. We will also have some "member incentives" -- you will have to attend a meeting to find out more!

Participation: Finally, a call to get involved. Again, I know there are many things competing for your time, but I hope you will make an effort to attend at least one chapter event this year. I promise it will be worth your time.

I welcome your suggestions and look forward to a productive and rewarding year!

Introduction to Trademarks :

Summary of Tom Turner's workshop

After the Arizona chapter's annual business meeting luncheon on Friday, May 19th, AZ SLA member, Tom Turner, presented a workshop entitled "Introduction to Trademarks."

Tom Turner served as the 16th Fellow with the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Program Office in Arlington, Virginia from 1998 to 1999. He has given presentations on searching patent and trademark information at the AzLA Annual Conference and to local librarians and inventor groups. As part of his Fellowship, he gave presentations at the Minneapolis Public Library, the Free Library of Philadelphia and Howard University. During his Fellowship year, Tom also did a stint as a vendor representing the PTDL Office at a few library conferences.

The group met in the recently remodeled and beautifully appointed electronic classroom in Noble Library on the campus of Arizona State University.

The Noble Science and Engineering Library at Arizona State University participates in the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Program (PTDLP) that is coordinated by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). As part of this program, Noble Library maintains a complete collection of all United States utility and design patents, copies of the Patent and Trademark Office's publications and all the search tools needed to perform patent and trademark searches.

Tom gave a brief summary of his year with the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Program Office, complete with slides. He then provided the group with an overview of trademarks and discussed searching techniques using the USPTO web site.

Little known trademark facts:

- The PTO issued 112,509 trademarks in 1999.

- 33,731 applications were for Internet related products or services.

- Maricopa County ranks 18th among counties in registration of federal trademarks.

- Trademark Color marks: colors used on products, packaging, labels or signs can serve a trademark function. Example: The yellow and green color of John Deere tractors.

- Trademark Configuration marks: also known as device marks or trade dress marks. Example: Pizza Hut's red roof.

- Trademark Sensory marks: sound, music or spoken words. Example: NBC chimes and Netscape's animated icon.

- Harley-Davidson wanted to get a trademark on the sound of their motorcycle engines.

Trademark infringement

- Courts have objected to the following marks when used with identical or similar products -- Cleo Cola = Coca Cola; Toro Rojo = Red Bull; Seycos = Seiko

Why search the Trademark database?

- Detection: Discovering problems before they sink your investment

- Protection: Defending a trademark from infringing marks.

- Competition: Gathering marketplace intelligence.

President-Elect, Carla Smith - Carla provided the list of officers for the coming year:

Affirmative Action: Jeanette Mueller-Alexander
Bulletin Editor: Dianne Bean
Bulletin Business Manager: Lisa Bradley
Career Guidance: Ann Eagan
Webmaster: Jack Mount
Government Relations: Cinda McClain

There was a review of programs for the last year. The programs were as follows: a May 1999 patent workshop presented by Susan Ardis, an October 1999 SLA videoconference, February 2000 presentation by Guy St. Clair, April 2000 International Special Librarians' Day celebration with Erika Williams and Geraldo Wood and a May 2000 trademark workshop presented by Tom Turner. Rebecca Welsch was introduced as the next program chair. Three positions that remain to be filled include Chapter Archivist, Consultant Chair, and Employment Chair. Carla has made folders for every Chair that includes information on responsibilities and room to put suggestions. Polin indicated that she has the balance sheets and procedures for the Treasurer position and will pass those along to her successor.

Strategic Planning/Past President, Laura Bender - The strategic plan is on the website and she is open for any ideas about how to present it or add to it. She indicated that the presentation given by Guy St. Clair supplied some ideas. There are some things that she believes we need to focus on as a chapter and those are membership and programming, specifically gaining new members/surveying current members and beginning to plan for the chapter's 25th anniversary in 2003.

Treasurer, Polin Lei - Polin stated that the chapter's finances are very healthy. The balances are:

Checking 1,606.68
Time deposit 3,504.79
Total 5,111.47

The income/expense balance is as follows:

Income 2,134.00
Expenses 1,865.78
Total 268.22

Polin also noted that the use of Visa is now available for SLA, and that may be something we should look into.

Secretary, Valorie Hanni Rice - no report.

OFFICER REPORTS

Affirmative Action, Jeanette Mueller-Alexander - no report.

Bulletin Editor, Dianne Bean - The AZ-SLA Bulletin goes to about 150 people 4 times/year.

Bulletin Business Manager, Lisa Bradley - About half of our advertisers have renewed, although some of the local advertisers chose not to renew.

Career Guidance, Ann Eagan - Ann has sent two messages to the UA Library School Discussion List and has received requests for assistance as well as responses from employers thanking her. She responded to each request received. Carla Smith asked Becky Welsch to describe her experience of receiving a makeover to help in the interviewing process of job searching.

Chapter Archivist/Webmaster, Jack Mount - He has done a little bit of reorganizing on the website, making a submenu to alleviate some of the length of the main page links. Employment is still getting three times the hits as the main page. He noted that the archives are all caught up.

Consultant Chair - Lucy Marshall has moved, and this position has not been filled as of yet.

Employment, Bonnie Rizzuto - Bonnie will not continue this position into the next year. Her main task has been to place employment information she receives to the AZ-SLA email discussion list. She wrote that she receives an unbelievable amount of job openings and has enjoyed communicating with people.

Government Relations, Cinda McClain - Was not able to get a proclamation from Governor Hull's office for International Special Librarians' Day.

International Relations, Pat Morris - no report.

Membership, Gordon Dutrisac - no report.

Networking: Phoenix, Sheila Donnelly - Valerie Pomerenke noted that the last dinner meeting was a Sweet Tomatoes and the last morning meeting at the Phoenix Public Library. There is one more meeting for the year, which is at Motorola.

Tucson, Lori Critz - There have been three lunch meetings in the last few months - one at India Oven (8 attending), at the Marriott University Park (16 or so attending), and the last at the public library, which was a joint meeting with the student chapter (8 students and 8 librarians attending).

Northern Arizona, Ann Egan - no report.

Professional Development, Valerie Pomerenke - Had a notice about a virtual seminar hosted in conjunction with SCIP. There is a tape and diskette available to purchase. It was decided that it would be worthwhile to purchase this for the chapter.

Public Relations, Lori Critz - The survey was mailed to 128 people using the official SLA list and sending reminders over the email discussion list. There is a 38% return rate so far and the total expenses were $110.00 for photocopying and mailing. There are questions concerning mentoring in the survey, and we will be able to see what the interest is in that when we look at the survey results. She is developing a program evaluation form, which will be tested out for Tom's program today. The brochures are available! There were 1,000 printed and they will be left with Gordon Dutrisac. Carla will contact Gordon by June concerning their distribution.

Publications, Laura Bender - The ideas of burning CD-ROM's or downloading files instead of printing a directory are still viable. The question left to answer is where the database/files will be housed. There is a mailing ready to send out to the 271 current entries to request updates.

Student Chapter, Chaire Macha - The last Tucson-area networking program included the student chapter and was well received. The panel format was the suggestion of the current student chapter president. The UA SIRLS program is experiencing a reduction in students due to the uncertainty surrounding accreditation, and it is expected that there will be more students and participation when that is settled.

Old Business:

Southwest Regional Conference - The chapter's initial investment was $500, and the treasurer for the conference is fairly confident that we will come out ahead. The final attendee count was 115. This was lower than expected, and some people offered that there was some competition from other conferences in the area being held in the same time frame. The chapters involved will meet in Philadelphia to discuss the regional conference and its future.

Comments from this meeting were that the program was stimulating, but the geographic disparity of those organizing it made planning difficult.

New Business:

Nominating Committee - The committee got very little response, leading committee members to contact people personally to ask for participation. The final slate was Rebecca Welsch for President-Elect and Lori Critz for Treasurer. A vote was taken at this meeting to show approval of the candidates. The vote was unanimous in favor of both candidates.

Karen announced the Member of the Year award; going to Polin Lei for all the service she has given this organization. We will miss her and wish her well. Polin received a Jefferson Cup. Her words upon receiving the award were that she feels this is a good group of professionals, that she learned a lot and never regrets any minute of being treasurer. Carla presented Karen a gift certificate in appreciation for her year as President.

Valorie Rice received a door prize of movie tickets.

Bill Johnson accepted the position of Employment Chair.

Meeting adjourned 1p.m. ¨

Congratulations to Polin Lei,

1999 AZ SLA Member of the Year!

Here being presented with the Jefferson Cup by Karen Holloway on May 19, 2000.

ISLD Theme Contest!

International Special Librarians Day, held the Thursday of National Library Week (April 5, 2001) , provides an opportunity for information professionals to promote their libraries' services and accomplishments within their organizations. ISLD was created in 1991 by the Special Libraries Association. The first celebration was so successful that the Board of Directors made it an annual event.

2001 marks the tenth anniversary of ISLD! As a member of the Association, you have the unique opportunity to submit a theme idea to be used in this year's celebration. If your idea is selected, a logo will be designed from the winning theme and a $200 cash award will be presented to you for celebrating ISLD 2001. Last year, twenty year member, Jerry Baldwin created the winning theme "Navigating the World's Knowledge."

Celebrate your day! Help change people's attitudes, perceptions, and understanding about what you do and the value you add. Large or small, your observance and participation of ISLD 2001 will make a difference. The deadline for submissions is November 17, 2000.

SLA is proud to announce Ten Years of Promoting ISLD!

1991 - "Information Beyond Borders: Building Global Partnerships"
1992 - "Information Knows No Bounds"
1993 - "Global Understanding Through Information"
1994 - "Building a Better World with Information"

Chapter Strategic Planning

In August Chapter officers met to review progress on the Arizona Chapter Strategic Plan that has been in place two years. Karen Holloway, Strategic Planning Chair, led eleven Chapter officers in a three-hour discussion on progress of the plan to date. To add to our discussion, we reviewed the results of the Membership Needs Assessment Survey. Your responses and comments were invaluable to us as we refined and revised our strategic directions.

While we did not revisit the Vision and Mission statements, they were in front of us to help guide our discussions. The SLA Strategic Plan (http://www.sla.org/assoc/slaplan.html), which was adopted by the SLA Board in June of this year, was also a resource document.

VISION: The Arizona Chapter of SLA will be the leading organization in the state for the advancement and provision of professional information management, a catalyst in the development of knowledge-based economy, and a strategic partner in the information-based society.

MISSION: To advance the competencies of SLA members through networking and professional development for the benefit of information consumers in Arizona business, government, education, professions and society, as well as to assist in shaping the education and development of future information professionals in the state.

The 1999-2001 plan is on Chapter Web site at http://www.sla.org/chapter/caz/plan99.html and it will be updated in the next few weeks to reflect the status of our goals and objectives. A new 2000-2002 Strategic Plan document is being developed which maintains the same over-arching goals, but changes some of the objectives for the next few years, again, based on your input.

Goal 1. Develop programs of interest to members.
1.1 Create 2000-2001 program schedule
1.2 Expand networking opportunities

Goal 2. Stimulate membership.
2.1 Revise membership recruitment plan
2.2 Develop a membership retention strategy

Goal 3. Continue relationships with University of Arizona Library School students.
3.1 Establish student promotions plan
3.2 Continue outreach to students

Goal 4. Strengthen the infrastructure of the Chapter.
4.1 Increase leadership effectiveness
4.2 Promote organizational wellness

Meet your 2000-2001 Arizona Chapter Officers

Carla Smith: President

Present Job: Information Research Specialist at Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector in Tempe, Arizona

Places of Residence: Rantoul, Illinois; Tucson, Arizona; Chandler, Arizona

Education: B.S. Speech & Hearing Science/Arizona State; M.S. Communication Disorders/Arizona State; M.L.S./The University of Arizona

What brought me to Arizona: My father was a civilian in the Air Force (Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois) and was transferred to Williams Air Force base in Mesa.

Why I am involved in SLA: Back in library school, I remember meeting Ann Eagan at an SLA student function and she encouraged me to join. Initially, my reasons for joining were purely selfish: I needed a job and I was hoping that I could get one through AZ SLA contacts. Since securing gainful employment, I have kept involved with the chapter and have really enjoyed the networking and professional development opportunities.

This quote sums it up for me: "SLA offers the opportunity to build on existing skills, stretch abilities, and learn skills which will translate to the job in a non-threatening environment."

Interests: Playing cribbage with my husband, Jim, and hanging out with our son, Nate, and our two dogs, Scout and Sam. I also collect library cards. At last count, I had over 200 borrower cards from U.S. and several foreign countries. If you have an old library card tucked away in your wallet, please send it my way. õ

Rebecca Welsch - President-elect / Program Chair

Present Job: Library assistant, Cactus Shadows High School, Cave Creek, AZ

Places of Residence: Midland, TX, Los Alamos, NM, Scottsdale, AZ

Education: BFA (fine arts) Arizona State, MLS Univ. of AZ

What brought me to Arizona: I wanted to go to college not too far from home (Los Alamos), but not too close. ASU was just right. I came in 1972, and love the desert.

Why I am involved in SLA: I joined for the networking opportunities and the hope of getting a new job. I have been a member for two years and have found the networking to be very enjoyable. I am learning a lot from the SLA members and officers.

Interests: Desert wildlife and plants, handweaving, and woodworking. My former career was as a custom furniture maker. E

Lori Critz: Treasurer

Present Job: Physical Sciences Librarian at the University of Arizona Science-Engineering Library

Places of Residence: I was born and raised in southern Connecticut but have resided in many locales including Washington, D.C., Troy, New York, Pensacola, Florida, San Diego, California (three times!), Chesapeake, Virginia, Newport, Rhode Island, and Tucson, Arizona.

Education: B.S., Biology, University of West Florida; M.S., Microbiology, Southern Connecticut State University; 5th Year Diploma - Secondary School Teaching Credential, San Diego State University; M.L.S., University of Rhode Island

What brought me to Arizona: My husband was offered a transfer to Arizona. At the time it was mid-February, 20 degrees and snowing in Rhode Island, so the sunny southwest seemed like a grand idea!

Why I am involved in SLA: I became involved with SLA for two reasons. First, SLA's philosophies closely align with my vision of what it means to be an information professional in today's world. Second, I have always found SLA to be an inviting organization - one that welcomes newcomers, fosters professional growth, and actively encourages participation of all members.

Interests: I have always been an avid reader of the mystery/crime genre. Now, I am attempting to add to the field as I work to develop/write the next "great American novel". I hope to complete this sometime before the close of this decade! &

Valorie Hanni Rice - Secretary

Present Job: Librarian for the Economic and Business Research Program at the Eller College of Business and Public Administration, University of Arizona. The Economic and Business Research Program provides economic forecasts for the state and metro areas as well as conducts research relating to business, economics, and public policy in Arizona. EBR is a member of the Association for University Business and Economic Research, the State Data Center program and the Bureau of Economic Analysis Data Users Group.

Places of Residence: Montana, Minnesota, and Arizona

Education: B.A. Psychology/Library Science, Concordia College (Moorhead, MN); M.L.S., University of Arizona.

What brought me to Arizona: I came to Arizona to attend library school and only intended to stay for nine to twelve months...that was eight years ago. I guess Arizona grows on you!

Why I am involved in SLA: To Learn -- the possibilities to gain a good deal of knowledge and understanding are great, not only from professional development programs but also by interacting/networking with other librarians.

Interests: Dancing – I am a member of a local country line dance team, the Saguaro Strutters, and I will try any form of dance that does not require a partner (since my husband does not have the same level of enthusiasm for it as I do). I also enjoy crocheting, hiking and reading, but not all at once! ƒ

The Benefits of Mentoring

Many professional associations are starting mentoring programs in an effort to encourage new members to join the organization, to stimulate networking, and to promote professional growth among the members. The Arizona Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is no exception. Talk has begun about forming a mentoring program for our members.

Mentoring can take many forms, and often the form taken is left up to the mentor and mentee. Sometimes it is a one-time meeting of one or more professionals and a group of students for a question and answer session. It can also be a tour of your facility for one or a group. These two examples take very little commitment from the mentor. One meeting and you are done, unless of course, you find the experience enjoyable and want to repeat it.

A long-term relationship can form between mentor and mentee. Even this form of mentorship does not have to put undue strain on your time. The whole relationship can take place through e-mail or telephone calls. You might choose to meet for lunch at conferences. The only requirement for a mentor is a willingness to share your knowledge with another.

For a little more than a year, I have participated in the mentoring program sponsored by the Arizona Library Association. After filling out a brief questionnaire, I was paired with a person with similar interests. AzLA made the questionnaire, promoted the program through their newsletter, paired people and gave each pair the other's telephone number and e-mail address. In addition, there was a break out session about the program at their annual conference in 1998. This was meant to give people ideas for what to do, and to increase participation in the program. At the 1999 conference, participants were encouraged to get together for lunch. All other contact has been at the discretion of the mentor and mentee.

My experience has been phenomenal! I was first invited to visit the Paradise Valley Community College library, workplace of my mentor, Lisa Miller. She showed me around the facility, and I observed as she gave a bibliographic instruction session to an English class. A month or so later, we went to lunch together, she looked over my resume and gave me suggestions to improve it. Since I had recently earned my MLS and am looking for my first professional position, this was very helpful.

Lisa is a very creative mentor. She has clarified terms on job announcements, arranged for me to meet with a counselor at PVCC about interviewing skills, introduced me to colleagues, and sent me job announcements I might have missed. By far the most fun part of our relationship to date has been a makeover to update my look.

Lisa felt that a new hairstyle might give me self-confidence and give the impression I was up on the latest in every way. She is a fan of Channel 3's morning news program Good Morning Arizona, in which they weekly do a

makeover. She wrote to them, mentioned our mentoring relationship, and asked that I be considered for a makeover. They agreed this would make an interesting story for their show. When Lisa called to tell me her big secret, I was hesitant. For years, I had had long braids. Was I ready for a change? Did I want to do this on live TV? I could only think about the implications for a few hours, because I was set for two days hence.

Lisa was very convincing, so we met at the TV station at 6:30 AM. We got a very brief explanation of what to expect, a before shot and intro for the camera, then the stylist, Rolf began his magic. There were no mirrors in the studio. All I could tell was that he was cutting my hair. I couldn't tell by how much because I had to hold still for the make-up artist. When all was done, the TV anchorwoman returned. She did not recognize me, and I had yet to see the results. With camera rolling, they mentioned the mentoring program and my goal of getting a new job.

Then my image appeared on the TV monitor and they asked what I thought.

          What a difference!

I think a mentoring program could benefit our chapter of SLA. It can be a tool for promoting Special Libraries to students and to librarians in public or academic libraries who may be considering a change. It would also provide additional networking opportunities and ignite the professional creativity of our members. ¨

School of Information Resources and Library Science
¨SLA Student Chapter

The student chapter of SLA has been busy this summer hosting tours and other events for the library school students. These tours give students an opportunity to see special libraries. Two tours were given over the summer. The first was to the Poetry Center located on campus. In July, SLA hosted a tour of the Arizona State Museum Library.

One of the goals of the SLA student chapter is to inform students about the roles of special libraries. Many library school students come to the program, unsure of where they want to go once they have their Master's. Some are not aware of the many different types of libraries. In July, we hosted a pizza party for students and special librarians. This gave students the opportunity to talk to those in the field, as well as some idea of what they might want to do once they graduate from the program.

During the fall semester, we hope to offer more tours, as well as scheduled talks between special librarians and students. This semester's officers are Jan Knight, President, Lisa Bunker, Vice President, Rob Lindley, Treasurer, and Tracy Cook, Secretary.
