President's Message

Karen Holloway . . . STRATEGIC PLANNING

In September Chapter officers met to review progress on the ArizonaChapter Strategic Plan that was developed last year. A strategic plan isnot a static document -- it requires monitoring and adjusting as theenvironments in which we work change. Laura Bender, Strategic PlanningChair, led twelve Chapter officers in a three-hour discussion on progressof the plan to date, which in turn stimulated many innovative ideas on howto accomplish the goals that have been set. The 1999-2001 plan is on theChapter Web site at http://www.sla.org/chapter/caz/plan99.html and it willbe updated in the next few weeks to reflect the outcomes of this session. You are encouraged to give us feedback or suggestions.

While we did not revisit the Vision and Mission statements, they were infront of us to help guide our discussions.

Vision: The Arizona Chapter of SLA will be the leading organization in thestate for the advancement and provision of professional informationmanagement, a catalyst in the development of knowledge-based economy, anda strategic partner in the information-based society.

Mission: To advance the competencies of SLA members through networkingand professional development for the benefit of information consumers inArizona business, government, education, professions and society, as wellas to assist in shaping the education and development of futureinformation professionals in the state.

Four goals are the focal points of the Strategic Plan:

1. Develop programs of interest to members.
Program planning is the responsibility of the President-Elect (CarlaSmith) and professional development opportunities are the responsibilityof the Professional Development Chair (Valerie Pomerenke), but these arenot one-person jobs. Ideas and suggestions are solicited from themembership at large. To gather specific program ideas, a short surveywill be published in a future issue of the Chapter bulletin. Also, satisfaction surveys for specific programs are being gathered at eachprogram. Local networking activities are greatly expanding, with reportedincreases in attendance at the Phoenix and Tucson events. A new NorthernArizona networking group is in the process of being formed by Ann Eaganand Dianne Bean.

2. Increase membership.
The Arizona Chapter has had a constant membership of about 128 people overthe last few years. We revised our ambitious goal of a 20% increase inmembership to 10% for the coming year. Strategies for retaining currentmembers were discussed and all of us were reminded that we shouldpersonally be inviting non-active, new, and non-members to our Chapterprograms. The Membership Chair (Gordon Dutrisac) is updating themembership welcome packet. The Affirmative Action Chair (JeanetteMueller-Alexander) has developed a plan to connect with other professionalinformation organizations in the state to broaden the outreach to diversegroups and individuals.

3. Build relationships with the University of Arizona Library School.
The Chapter is pursuing plans to establish more formal relationships withthe School of Information Resources and Library Science even though thewithdrawal of accreditation by ALA is in the appeal process. Some ideasthat have been put forward are internships with Chapter members, ascholarship to attend an SLA Annual Conference, research paper awards, andmentors for students and new graduates. Some of these activities wouldneed an ongoing funding source that does not currently exist within theChapter. The Student Chapter Liaison (Claire Macha), the Career GuidanceChair (Ann Eagan) and the International Relations Chair (Pat Morris) arefurther developing these concepts.

4. Increase the organizational effectiveness of the Arizona Chapter.
In addition to the fall and spring Strategic Planning meetings, theleadership is looking at ways to increase our effectiveness as a team. The Nominating Committee and the Program Planning Chair will plan asession that is intended to encourage members to step forward ascandidates for office. Those of us who have served in one or more Chapteror Division offices are enthusiastic in our support of SLA and would liketo engage more Chapter members in these opportunities. Communication is akey part of organizational effectiveness and the related goals that wehave met are establishment of dates and solicitation of content (includingmember profiles) for the Chapter bulletin; maintenance of a dynamic Webpage; and growth of the electronic discussion list. The Chapter'sfinancial health is also key to our effectiveness and while we aremaintaining a slightly positive cash flow, our Treasurer (Polin Lei)reminded us that we should proactively seek fundraising opportunities.

Indexing Gems........Cut and Polished Indexes

Here's another special librarian putting her skills to work in a new area.I have been busy over the summer launching Indexing Gems, a new freelanceindexing business. I create back-of-the-book indexes for trade andscholarly books, specializing in Asian studies, political science andhistory.

I left Motorola last year after 12 years as a corporate librarian andlibrary manager. Searching for a career change, I was eager to apply myAsian studies and political science degrees in some way. If I connectwith the right publishers and editors, indexing will be a great match. Ofcourse, if social sciences don't pay the rent, I can always tryelectronics.

Notes from the October 14 meeting held at SRP in Phoenix.

Lunch, courtesy of Information Handling Services, was followed by apresentation by Chester Sykes of IHS. He gave an overview of IHS, whichis based in Denver, Colorado and has local representatives. IHS is theleading supplier of technical information solutions and mission-criticaldata to engineers, He demonstrated their Specs & Standards program.

The business meeting began with a short talk by Eric, a representative ofthe Fiesta Bowl Committee. He explained that the Fiesta Bowl began in1971 and has since become one of the biggest bowl games. Contributing tothe success of the Bowl has been the local hospitality. There are 65events throughout the year connected with the Fiesta Bowl, including thegame, which will be January 2 at 6 p.m. In our dealings with the FiestaBowl, Valerie Pomerenke will coordinate the volunteers and Lisa Bradleywill spearhead the indexing of the team manuals. The volunteers will mana booth at the team hotels to provide information for the teams, coachesand staffs. The Committee will let us know in late November what timeswill be available for volunteering. Anyone who wants to volunteer shouldcontact Valerie. In return for our help, we will receive tickets toFiesta Bowl events, including four tickets to the game for a raffle, aswell as signs and voice recognition at the game, team hotels and eventssurrounding the game. Eric thanked us for our help stating, "We don'thave another group like this."

President's report (Karen Holloway):
It was decided in the strategic planning meeting in September that theChapter should try to raffle the four Fiesta Bowl game tickets. Karencontacted SLA headquarters to find out if this was allowable. She wastold that it was up to individual state laws, and after consulting theArizona legislative site, she found that we are free to conduct a raffle. The only provisios for a nonprofit entity are that they have beenestablished in the state five years, and that only members of theorganization can sell the tickets. We will hold the raffle on December1st. Lisa Bradley is the contact person for this. Everyone will receivea book of 25 raffle tickets to sell. The tickets and money should be sentto Lisa. Those people in Tucson who may need extra tickets can alsocontact Karen. There was also a suggestion to have the student chapterhelp sell tickets at the U of A on the mall.

President-elect/Program Chair Carla Smith had a baby boy in September.Cinda McClain noted that they are not checking Carla's email at work whileshe is out, so anyone needing to reach her should try another way.

Bambi Wessel has moved out of state, so there is a vacancy for the PublicRelations Chair. No one has been approached yet about filling this chair, but if anyone is willing to do it they should contact Karen. Karen hasBambi's files.

Treasurer (Polin Lei): The balance in the checking account is $1,368.33.The balance in the time share account is $3,403.51. Polin said that wedid fine on the videoconference and suggested that the Chapter purchasethe tape. Valerie Pomerenke reported that AzSLA was entitled to make onetape of the videoconference, and this was done. Laura Bender stated thatshe believes we have all the videotapes from previous conferences exceptpossibly the last one.

Secretary (Valorie Rice): No report.

Affirmative Action (Jenny Mueller-Alexander): Jenny brought the brochurefrom headquarters that she plans to send to school guidance counselors inthe state. There is space on the back where we could place Chapterinformation and/or our logo. Jenny will prepare a letter to go with thebrochures providing some information on the profession.

Bulletin Editor (Dianne Bean): Publication of the October Bulletin waspostponed until after the October 14 meeting. She thinks that problemswith the membership labels she receives from headquarters have beenresolved for now.

Bulletin Business Manager (Lisa Bradley): Lisa is getting out a letter toadvertisers shortly. She suggests that if we have any vendors that wethink might like to advertise to let her know. The ads are also linked inour online version of the bulletin, so that should be an added incentive.

Lisa also spoke about the indexing project for the Fiesta Bowl. She isanticipating having the project done by the second week of November.Peggy Pedigo and Carla Smith have been helping her on this project.

Career Guidance Chair (Ann Eagan): Ann has sent a message to the librarystudent email discussion list, but has not received any responses so far.Four people have been contacted about a Northern Arizona networking group.

Chapter Archivist/Webmeister (Jack Mount): No report.

Consultant Chair (Lucy Marshall): No report.

Employment Chair (Bonnie Rizzuto): No report.

Government Relations Chair (Cinda McClain): No report.

International Relations Chair (Pat Morris): Pat is looking for contacts orinformation about anyone who has recently been or worked overseas andwould be willing to do a presentation. She said that she has two potentialspeakers, but that she would like to have a panel of presenters forInternational Special Librarians Day in April.

Membership Chair (Gordon Dutrisac): Gordon has found a number of errors inthe data sent from headquarters, as they have had problems with theirdatabases. He has received four messages from people in other chaptersmoving to Arizona and wanting to switch their chapter memberships.

Networking Chair/Phx (Sheila Donnelly): Cinda summarized Sheila's reportin her absence. The first morning meeting was held at SRP hosted byValerie Pomerenke and Cathy Large. There were problems with the mailingsfor the first dinner meeting - apparently the post office thought thereturn address was the correct one, and she got several envelopes back!Sheila has compiled a schedule and will give that to Jack to post on theweb site. She is sending a survey asking if people would prefer receivingnotices via email, as she believes this would be a better way tocommunicate with everyone.

Networking Chair/Tucson (Jane Matter): no report.

Professional Development (Val Pomerenke): No report.

Publications Chair (Laura Bender): Laura spoke to the systems people atheadquarters about getting space on their server. She was told that theyare now looking at giving chapters their own space on the servers. She istrying to put the directory up as a revenue-producing project.

Public Relations: Bambi Wessel has moved to Wisconsin, and her duties forthe Fiesta Bowl will be shared by Val Pomerenke and Lisa Bradley. Lisawill be indexing the team's books and would like to hear from anyone whois interested in indexing. Val is looking for people to help at theconcierge booth.

Student Chapter Liaison (Claire Macha): Pat gave an update in Claire'sabsence stating that there has been progresson several programs involving students. There are three specificprojects: an internship with the executive board, an essay contest inwhich the winner receives funding to attend the national conference, and apanel discussion regarding publishing/getting published.

OLD BUSINESS
Strategic Planning/Past President (Laura Bender):
Laura reported that somereally great ideas came out of the last strategic planning meeting and thecommittee was able to assign responsibilities in several areas. She isstill working with Valorie Rice to "plug in" all the areas in the Excelfile so it can be given to the executive board for review. Jennysuggested that a free MS Excel viewer be linked from the web site forthose who do not have Excel. The notes from the last meeting will not makeit into the newsletter at this time.

Southwest Regional Conference - Laura Bender
Karen, Laura and Esther Gil are putting out the preliminary program. Theyare also working with Sandy Spurlock from the Rio Grande Chapter and Dorisfrom the San Diego Chapter on vendors. They are giving all that to Carlawho will work from home to do the mockup. They will possibly use the sameprinter that the chapter did for the directory.

NEW BUSINESS
Jenny mentioned that Al Pratt is collecting card sets and early computerstorage and retrieval devices. The meeting adjourned at 3 p.m.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FIESTA BOWL

The Arizona Special Libraries Association is working with the Fiesta Bowl this year for a unique opportunity toprovide recognition to the Special Libraries Association and librarians. The Fiesta Bowl began in 1971 in Tempe at Sun Devil stadium and last yearhad grown to host the #1 teams in the nation. The reason the Fiesta Bowlgets to work with the best is the hospitality Arizonans show the visitingteams. The Special Librarians Association had the opportunity to providesome of this hospitality by volunteering at the team hotels.

Volunteers will work as concierges in the team hotels to provide local anddirectional information to coaches, staff, wives, and alumni. Volunteersfor AzSLA will be teamed with a Fiesta Bowl staff member. The desk willhave the Team Handbook that is being indexed by Lisa Bradley and hercommittee. If you are interested in working on the indexing project pleasecontact Lisa.

Valerie Pomerenke is coordinating the volunteers to staff the informationdesk. In November the Fiesta Bowl will have a firm schedule and Valeriewill send out a note to all volunteers to schedule the hours at theinformation desk at the hotels. While the teams haven't been decided, thehotels have. The teams will either be staying at Westcourt in the Buttesin Tempe or The Scottsdale Plaza in Scottsdale. The information desk willbe staffed 8am - 8pm with 3 4-hour shifts each day from December 27ththrough January 2nd.

The Arizona Special Libraries Association is receiving excellent publicityfor all of our efforts. Our sponsorship package includes advertisements inthe Fiesta Bowl newsletter, signage at each hotel, scoreboard recognitionduring the Fiesta Bowl game, and a link from the Fiesta Bowl website, http://fiestabowl.org . In addition to recognition, the chapter isreceiving 2 pairs of the tickets to the Fiesta Bowl game which we areraffling to generate funds for our chapter. We are also receiving ticketsto various Fiesta Bowl events such as the Block Party, Band Day, and theFiesta Bowl parade. The advertisements are an exciting way to tell theworld how awesome special librarians are. Please call Valerie at602-236-5676 or send her an email at vafresch@srpnet.com if you areinterested in volunteering for this interesting and exciting event.

REMEMBER WHEN....?

Al Pratt, retired Library School faculty (U of A & others) is looking forLC printed cards, typed or, better yet, hand-written ones, cards fromKardex files, cards from (I think it was) the Chang duplicator,edge-notched cards from circulation systems, peekaboo cards, Unitermcards, all the gear that we used to use to keep the shop running beforewe went to electrons. alpratt@compuserve.com

Global Goings On?! What do YOU want to know about on the InternationalLibrary/Information Scene?

The International Liaison (me!) is looking for people/ideas/suggestionsfor the International Special Librarians Day program for 2000. Thisprogram is held annually during National Library Week and is a great timeto internationally expand your horizons. Past programs have includedlibrarians have gone on international sabbaticals, authors who traveled onFulbright's and researchers doing international collaborative projects.Other possible scenarios could include international visiting scholars, graduate students or librarians that may have been involved in a "workexchange."

Sooo, if you know someone or of someone who has been abroad and hasutilized the libraries/information centers during their trip, let me know.We do not have funds to pay travel or stipends so it is likely they wouldhave to be a "local."

MEMBER PROFILE: Jeanette M. Mueller-Alexander -- Affirmative Action

Hayden Library Reference Services, Arizona State University

Present Job: Reference Librarian & Business Bibliographerspecial areas of interest: economics, marketing, health administration, small business

Former Places of Residence: Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, but mostlyDuluth, Minnesota

Education: BA: German Moorhead State University (Moorhead, MN); MLS:Indiana University, Bloomington

What brought me to city/Arizona: I moved here when I accepted my currentinteresting position. Why even think of moving to Arizona? I waspractically frozen solid. Having Kool-Aid for blood is tough when theweather is always colder by the lake! In Arizona, it's a distinctadvantage. Now, I just freeze in the air conditioning.

Why I am involved in SLA: SLA is the library organization that addressesthe needs of a typical business/corporate library. Most of the students Itrain to do business research will have to work with the corporate libraryto get their research information. I find it easier to keep current withall the networking opportunities available in SLA.

Az Chapter Responsibilities: Affirmative Action Chair
1. plan, direct, and monitor an affirmative action plan for theAssociation in accordance with its policy statement for an AffirmativeAction Program;

2. initiate, develop, and encourage Association-wide plans related to therecruitment, development, and advancement of minority librarians andinformation professionals;

3. communicate minority concerns through the Association newsletter;

4. assist the SLA Scholarship Committee with requests related toAffirmative Action Scholarship(s).

Interests: Reading non-fiction, dancing, costuming, gardening, family, not mowing a lawn or shoveling snow, dancing, fixing things, keeping upwith the ever-entertaining Arizona politics, dancing.

MEMBER PROFILE: Ann Eagan -- Career Guidance Chair

Present Job: Head of Reference, Cline Library, Northern Arizona University, PO Box 6022, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6022, (520) 523-0340, Fax: (520)523-3770.

Places of Residence: Wautoma, WI; Flagstaff, AZ; Ft. Collins, CO; Tucson,AZ; Reno, NV; Tucson, AZ; Flagstaff, AZ.

Education: B.S., Physics - Northern Arizona University; MLS - Universityof Arizona

What brought me to Flagstaff: Every time I have been back to Flagstaff inthe 19 years since I earned my B.S., it still felt like home so when thejob ad appeared for the Head of Reference, I knew I had to apply. Nowwith my husband also getting a job as a professor here, it is a dream cometrue. We have moved into a house near the edge of the national forest somy rating for Flagstaff as a place to live comes out even higher (in myprevious profile I mentioned that I rated cities on how fast I could getout of them).

Why am I involved in SLA: As a student I joined ALA, SLA, ASIS, AzLA, andMPLA. The rates were inexpensive and it gave me a chance to find out whateach of the organizations provided. I gave up ALA when I went to an annualconference and discovered that I had already heard all of the informationat SLA or ASIS a year or two before! I find the subject-based roundtablesat SLA Annual Meeting to be very useful and the leadership trainingexcellent. The more focused exhibits are great, too. Also, SLA provideslocal and regional options for involvement which were very helpful when Icould not afford to travel for financial reasons. I could be quite activeas the Tucson Networking Chair and as the Newsletter editor without havingto travel to the annual meetings. When I could travel, I was able to takeon the positions of president-elect and president and represent theArizona Chapter. It was an honor to serve the chapter in this manner. Icontinue to be active in the chapter as the Career Guidance Chair and amember of the strategic planning committee. I encourage everyone to beinvolved in some way.

Interests: hiking, backpacking, reading (primarily science fiction, fantasy, and mysteries), swimming, and gardening.
