President's Message

Karen Holloway . . . Communicate!

In writing this first column as Chapter President, I realized that I know very few of you in the Chapter since I've been in Arizona only since last October. However, because of my long-standing activities in SLA, some of our paths may have crossed at annual conferences. My goal this year as President is to increase communication among Chapter members, including officers. One of the most valuable aspects of SLA is the resource found in fellow members. This year I would urge you to communicate -- to exchange ideas and to network.

What are some of the ways we can connect? Certainly the Chapter discussion list is one avenue. (By the way, SLA Headquarters staff is encouraging chapters and divisions to use the term "discussion list" instead of "listserv" because of possible proprietary nature of the term "listserv.") Pose a question to the list that prompts discussions or helps you answer a question in your organization. You can subscribe by sending an email to listserv@listserv.sla.org and in the message put: subscribe sla-caz Your Name.

The Chapter's Web site should be bookmarked in your Web browser ( http://www.sla.org/chapter/caz/ ). Here you'll find past issues of bulletins, announcements of forthcoming meetings, a list of chapter officers, and links to other organizations.

Some of you participate in the networking meetings held in Tucson and Phoenix, more or less monthly. Anne Eagan would like to hear from members in central and northern Arizona who would be interested in meeting. These are opportunities for members in close proximity to get together informally, usually for lunch or dinner. The announcements are made on the Chapter discussion list, but you you may want to contact the respective networking chairs to make sure you are notified of forthcoming events:

Phoenix Networking Chair: Sheila Donnelly 602-413-8073 r40881@email.sps.mot.com
Tucson Networking Chair: Jane Matter 520-790-2596 matterj@yahoo.com
Northern Arizona: Ann Eagan 520-523-0340 ann.eagan@nau.edu

I recently sent a note on the Chapter discussion list encouraging members to write a profile for the Bulletin. I hope Dianne Bean, the Bulletin editor, received many responses. But it's never too late. I'm sure she would appreciate having more on file than she can publish in this issue.

The Chapter programs offered throughout the year also give you an opportunity to meet and talk with fellow members. Carla Smith, President-Elect, is planning some exciting programs this year, the first one on October 14. A business meeting will follow the program and it's not just for officers! If you would like to learn more about the operation of the Chapter and SLA, you are encouraged to attend.

And, last but not least, there is the telephone. We tend to forget that it's good to hear a voice and exchange greetings in real time. If you haven't talked to one of your colleagues for awhile, why not call? I would like to hear your ideas, thoughts, suggestions, in any form, so let's communicate!

MEMBER PROFILE: Patricia Morris

Hello to all the AzSLA Cybrarian members! My name is Patricia Morris and I work at the University of Arizona in Tucson. I am a member of the Science Engineering Team and for almost 5 years now specialized in Life Sciences as the liaison to departments such as Ecology and Evolutionary Biology & Molecular and Cellular Biology at the UA. I moved here from Ann Arbor Michigan where I served as the Natural Sciences Librarian at the University of Michigan for 3 years. I also worked as a Science Librarian at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Librarian at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (also known as VPI or Virginia Tech) for 5 1/2 years. I received my B.S. and MLIS from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The team organizational structure of the UA Libraries was the main reason I decided to relocate. It was so different and dynamic compared to the other libraries where I worked. I also wanted to live in an area without a "real" winter and Tucson's climate certainly fit that description. In addition I wanted my 4 children to experience the culture and beauty of the southwest.

I am very happy to serve as the International Liaison for the chapter as SLA has always served me well as a great way to network with fabulous folks and has provided positively stimulating insight into our ever evolving profession in the process! ?

Summary of Workshop

'Searching for U.S. Patents and Trademarks on the Internet: The Reality'

On May 21, 1999, the Arizona Chapter sponsored a workshop "Searching for U.S. Patents and Trademarks on the Internet: The Reality." The presenter was Susan Ardis, MLS, Head of the Science Libraries Division and Head of the Engineering Library at the University of Texas at Austin. The workshop was held in a computer training room at Arizona State University. Each participant was able to work hands-on at a terminal that was connected to the Internet.

The workshop was well received by SLA members and non-members alike. During the four-hour session, participants became familiar with what patent and trademark resources are on the Internet. They learned the difference between what information is on the Internet and what information is in more traditional patent and trademark tools, and they learned how to search for patent and trademark information found in web-based tools.

Susan Ardis is a very dynamic speaker and received glowing evaluations from the workshop participants.

Thank you to everyone who helped put this program together!--Submitted by Carla Smith, Program Chair

Notes from the May meeting

Jack Past from Northern Light Technology LLC gave a presentation about their research engine, and gave a further demonstration elsewhere on campus after the meeting for those who were interested in seeing it firsthand.

Business meeting was called to order at 1:35 p.m.

President's report (Laura Bender): Laura commented on the quality of the workshop held earlier in the day, and that it has been a full year for activities. She urged us all to be ambassadors for librarianship (yes, the "l" word!).

Strategic Planning/Past President (Chris Vathis Howell): Chris will continue to work with the new president and others on the strategic plan. Things have really been moving along, and there are plans to meet sometime this summer to look at the next year and further, including the chapter's 25th anniversary. We need to start planning for the 25th now.

Treasurer (Polin Lei): A copy of the treasurer's report from Polin was included in the agenda handed out at the meeting.

The balance as of May 21 for the checking account is 2200.79.

Secretary (Louis Howley): Valorie Rice took the notes for this meeting in Louis' absence.

Affirmative Action (Jenny Mueller-Alexander): Received a reply from AzLA. Their mentoring program is an internal type of situation, meant for paraprofessionals moving up in the profession. We can move ahead with our project since we now know that we will not be interfering with AzLA's program. Will send out letter approved last year to new officers.

Bulletin Editor (Dianne Bean): No report, but Laura Bender mentioned that we continue to receive kudos on the bulletin.

Bulletin Business Manager (Lisa Bradley): There have been a number of renewals, but the balance is not reflecting that. Suggested a meeting with Polin and Dianne to find out the basis for this.

Career Guidance Chair (Ann Rowland): no report.

Chapter Archivist/Webmeister (Jack Mount): Jack would like us to continue to send any items that would impact the chapter to him so that he can place them on the web site.

Consultant Chair (Lucy Marshall): No new activity.

Employment Chair (Donna Colleta): No report.

Government Relations Chair (Cinda McClain): The governor declined issuing a proclamation for International Special Librarian's Day April 15.

International Relations Chair (Pat Morris): No report. The International Special Librarian's Day activities in Tucson were successful.

Membership Chair (Gordon Dutrisac): In March 1999 there were 126 members. He noted that there is usually a drop in the number in March (from 139 members). Gordon sends out a letter to new members with a list of officers and networking chairs.

Networking Chair/Phx: Sheila Donnelly has taken over the responsibilities for this chair. The next meeting will be at Lewis & Roca Library May 26th at 7:30 a.m.

Networking Chair/Tucson (Carol Elliott): There was a dinner meeting April 29th at Geronimoz with about 15 attending, including a number of new faces.

Publications Chair (Laura Bender): There is nothing new regarding the online version, but the envelopes are ready for mailing for updating information on the new directory.

Public Relations (Bambi Wessel): The Fiesta Bowl meeting has not happened yet because of scheduling conflicts. The meeting is planned for May 26 at 5 p.m. She only has seven members helping with the project at the moment, and would like to have a few more. Bambi pointed out the ad that ran in the Arizona Journal for the Susan Ardis workshop, which cost $90.

Student Chapter Liaison (Claire Macha): There is renewed activity with the student SLA. They have a full slate of new officers for the fall, Ian Hall being the outgoing president and Sarah Paciorek the incoming. There are activities planned for the summer as well. The update on SIRLS is that there is supposed to be a decision made by ALA by June. If the appeal does not go through, students will have 18 months to graduate with accreditation. John Budd withdrew his application for Dean of the School of Information Resources and Library Science, Carla Stoffle will be the interim Dean of the library school beginning July 1.

Strategic Planning Meeting ...

To be held at SRP in Phoenix on Friday, September 24, 1999. The Executive Board and Chairs will put together a plan for the coming year with the help of the membership. We're seeking ideas from all Arizona Chapter members about increasing membership, and generating enthusiasm for our very active and productive chapter. We'll meet in the ISB Building at 1600 N. Priest Drive from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUE FROM THE FIESTA BOWL

The Fiesta Bowl volunteer staff have made a very exciting request of the Arizona SLA membership. They have requested our assistance in staffing the "Coordinator of the Day" desk assignments. Coordinator of the Day is a volunteer position assigned to each teams hotel. You will be seated at a desk with a computer, copy machine, telephone and Coordinator of the Day booklet. You are there to assist the team coaches, players, band, cheerleaders, alumni and their families.

This is an unusual opportunity for you to represent SLA. Our skills really match their needs. This is reference work with a twist! You will use the internet to develop maps, to answer questions and help the visiting teams feel comfortable in Phoenix. You will meet other volunteers from the community. It is a chance to spotlight our professional field to Arizona. You can invite your friends to volunteer also. It will be fun!!

ALL VOLUNTEERS WILL BE INVITED TO A BASH AT THE BILTMORE HOTEL IN SEPTEMBER. I hope you will volunteer if you are available.

We need volunteers from December 26, 1999 - January 2, 2000. Two people are needed (one for each hotel) in two shifts. The first shift is from 8 am - 2 pm, and the second is 2 pm - 8 pm.

I would like to have your names by Labor Day weekend. In order to be invited to the Fiesta Bowl Bash at the Biltmore I will need your names by Labor Day. Please respond with the dates (and times if you want) that you will be able to work.

Questions and names can be addressed to: Bambi Wessel, bwessel@primenet.com. Thank you!

An Interview with a Scholarship Winner : Karen Holloway talks with Ken Randles

In July Ken Randles joined the University of Arizona Science-Engineering Library team as an Assistant Librarian. He is a recent graduate of the School of Library and Information Science (LIS) at the University of Kentucky and was one of two $6,000 SLA scholarship winners this year. I thought it would be informative for Chapter members to hear his thoughts on his education, the scholarship award, and his perspective of SLA. He can be reached at andlesk@bird.library.arizona.edu or 520-621-6387. Karen Holloway

1. How did you find out about the SLA scholarships and what led you to apply?

I first became aware of the SLA scholarships at the New Student Orientation for the LIS program at the University of Kentucky (UK). The UK SLA Student Group presented new students with brochures about participation in SLA and the benefits that could be derived. I read the requirements for the SLA Scholarship at that time, but I did not feel I could write the required essay on my plans for contributing to special librarianship. Like many beginning LIS students, I didn't know much, if anything, about special libraries, special librarianship, or what I wanted to do once I left the LIS program. I did not believe I could write a competitive essay at this time.

However, a year later, beginning my second (last) year in library school, I reevaluated my decision about the scholarship. I was certain, then, that I was acquainted well enough with special librarianship to prepare competitive application materials. This knowledge came from work at UK special libraries, participation in SLA, and enrolling in special library courses. Yes, the $6,000 awarded as the SLA Scholarship was an incentive for applying, but I discovered other benefits to applying before the end of the application review process. Preparing and submitting materials to be evaluated for scholarships focuses you on your goals and advertises your career intentions to those interested in hiring new graduates.

2. What did you learn about yourself in the process of applying for the scholarship?

Applying required that I assess and detail my work, academic, and group participation accomplishments as a graduate student and undergraduate student. The work habits I saw patterned in my history illustrated that I am diligent at attending to day-to-day duties for long periods of time, patiently working towards long-term goals. Also I will promote myself and take leadership to pursue increased rewards for my colleagues and myself when needed. This may be a result of my tendency to see my future through a "visionary" perspective. In my required essay for the SLA Scholarship, I described how I would research the changing information habits and needs of scientists and engineers, to advance statistical research in that area to best meet changing needs. At the time I wrote the essay I did not know if I could achieve the stated goals, but as the scholarship committee decided to award me a scholarship, I know my thinking was in the right direction.

3. When you were a library science student at the University of Kentucky, what motivated your involvement in the student chapter of SLA?

I was interested in joining the UK SLA Student Group as soon as learned about it during UK SLIS orientation. My decision to join was based on the following points. Being a part of the student group exposes you to issues and trends in special librarianship not covered in classes. Involvement in the decision making and action-taking functions of a student group is good preparation for conducting successful meetings as a professional. Participation in a professional organization as a student looks good on a resume, especially if you hold office. I personally wanted to help improve student/faculty relations in UK's LIS program and promote camaraderie amongst its students.

The UK SLA Student Group is active in the SLA Kentucky Chapter, so I felt through student group participation I would be able to learn about librarianship from professional librarians before taking my first professional position, gaining real-world knowledge. I knew that networking with information professionals while still a student shows professionals you are motivated, more than willing to work with others, and care about the profession's condition and future. Not the least ofthese, I realized that I should get to know the professionals in SLA before I graduated, for I would be working with and relying upon them no matter where I accepted my first professional position.

MEMBER PROFILE -- Lisa Bradley

Lisa Bradley - Business Manager

Currently I live in Phoenix, Arizona. My present job position is at Motorola in the Sensor Products Division as a Market & Technology Research Analyst. I was thrilled to obtain this position since it is within a Marketing Department which is a whole "new world" compared to the previous one-person special library positions I have held.

I am a native of Denver, Colorado. I have also lived in Durango, CO, Albuquerque, NM and Austin, TX. I attended library school at the University of Texas at Austin. I arrived in Phoenix from Austin over two years ago for my current position at Motorola. SLA was the first library association I joined as a library school student at UT. I then became the SLA student chapter President during my second year at UT. I am involved in SLA because it is rich with networking opportunities and broadens my current knowledge even after I have left school. Currently, I hold the SLA Arizona Chapter office of Business Bulletin Manager.

Other interests include skiing, biking, volleyball, hiking, and tennis. I love mountains dearly and always want to live in the West.
