President's Message

Strategies for the Future . . . Laura Bender

"You will recognize your own path when you come upon it, because you willsuddenly have all the energy and imagination you will ever need."---Jerry Gillies

We're heading into a remarkable season here in Arizona--Fall. The weatheris cooler, the light is sharper, there's an air of industry, and a sensethat we can get things done.

Your executive board, along with some officers and past officers of ourchapter, met at the Casa Grande Public Library on Tuesday, September 22,to begin the strategizing process for a successful year. Their energy wascontagious--many good ideas surfaced and will be outlined in LouisHowley's meeting minutes.

Stay tuned for some good programming--at this point, possibilities includepatents and trademarks, knowledge management and competitive intelligence.Don't forget to sign up for the teleconference on October 8 entitled"Harnessing Intranet Potential." Send your registration to: Ann Fiegen,2830 N. Lloyd Bush Dr., Tucson, AZ 85745.

An exciting opportunity is in the planning stages as I write this letter. The 2nd Annual Southwest Regional Conference will take place April 5-7,2000, in San Diego, CA. The Arizona Chapter is partnering with the RockyMountain Chapter to work on the public relations for this conference.Southwest Region members (including us) will take over the Shelter PointeHotel and Marina, and share exciting programs and learning opportunities.

Each person left the meeting on Tuesday with an AR--AssignedResponsibility. We'll reconvene on Tuesday, November 10, same place, sametime, to finalize our strategic plan for the coming year.

I was reminded of several important facts at the Sept. 22 meeting:

1) We have an abundance of talent in this organization. This includes you.

2) Working with the board and our great membership will not only supportmy interest in information provision and dissemination, butwill enable me to hone my leadership skills. You can hone yours too.

3) I am building a network of professional colleagues, both current andfuture (our students are our future). Networking leads to leads--job leads, either for first jobs or futurejobs

4) I will gain experience in areas that will complement the opportunitiesafforded me at my current job--areas such as public relations, budgetbuilding, and mentoring. You can complement your skills, too, by attending meetings, conferences, and special events.

5) Participating in SLA at the local and national levels is an investmentin my future; the more I'm involved, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I have to give back to SLA and the information profession. Develop new skills, develop new relationships and strengthen ournetworks. Make a smart, timely investment in your future--Get involved inSLA.

....Have you changed your address?

... If you have moved or changed jobs recently, the easiest way to makesure we don't lose track of you is to let SLA National Headquarters knowfirst. Send a message with your updated information to sherry@sla.org. Taunya will update all mailing lists and pass the information along to theArizona Chapter.

There is very little variation from month to month with the biggest dipsoccurring when the yearly renewals occur (members may be on one of twobilling cycles). The average monthly membership is approximately 131.

SLA Headquarters transferred its membership records to a new databaseprovider last year and has been having problems with these records eversince. The explanation given at the Membership Chairs meeting inIndianapolis was that the new company was not providing adequate softwaresupport. As a result, SLA Headquarters has been hampered in its abilityto provide information on membership to the various chapters anddivisions. Prior to the recent changeover, each state chapter receivedmonthly reports of any changes to a member's record so they could maintaintheir own individual databases, but since 1997, this service has not beenavailable. SLA Headquarters expects substantial improvements to be made inthe membership database in the coming year with yet another databasesupplier. Improvements that can be expected in upcoming years:

1) New members will have renewal based on anniversary date, not thepresent choice of two renewal cycles.

2) The database will provide virtual direct access for membership chairsso that they can directly request customized reports and make updates tomembers' address information.

If members have any address changes that SLA needs to know about (thisincludes new email addresses), you may email the new main contact formaintaining membership records, Sherry Wilson at the following address: sherry@sla.org or her phone no. at 202/234-4700 ext 641.

Gordon Dutrisac, the Engineering Librarian at ASU, will assumeresponsibilities for the state chapter membership chair this summer. Ifyou need to contact him, you may reach him at 602/965-7609 or email him atgordon.dutrisac@asu.edu.

Thiswill be called "Southwest Regional Conference II: Ahead of the Curve."

There may be another distance learning program in October if we have afacility.

It is time to start planning for the 25th Chapter Anniversary.

AZ-SLA Membership ChairmanReference Librarian, Engineering & Computer ScienceNoble Science Library | Arizona State UniversityBox 871006 | Tempe, AZ 85287-1006602.965.7609 | fax : 602.965.0883

Responsibilities: Subject specialist and liaison (to allengineering-related departments at main campus except strategic areas),collection development, instruction, reference, liaison, standards.

Education: B.A., Canadian History, Laurentian University (Sudbury,Ontario); M.L.I.S., Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia)

How did I end up here? (Engineering librarian): Fresh out of libraryschool I worked as a slide curator for the Department of Architecture atthe Technical University of Nova Scotia. I really enjoyed working withthe media and the subject area. I was asked to put a few hours a week onthe reference desk, at first I was a little intimidated with theengineering questions but quickly grew to like working with theengineering students and faculty. Following the departure of a referencelibrarian to the University of Arizona, I was asked to fill in as thelibrarian responsible for Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering andFood Science. It only took a couple of months working at TUNS to realizethat I really enjoyed the field and start applying for permanentpositions.

How I ended up here? (Tempe, Arizona): As someone who enjoys travel andnew experiences, I grabbed the map showing North American area codes fromthe telephone book and three Crayola crayons (green, yellow and red) andbegan filling in the map according to places where I'd like to live andwork. In the end, most of North America was yellow, but the Southwest wasone of the few places I colored green (thanks to Tony Hillerman novels,Georgia O'Keefe and to a lesser extent the unique places like Las Vegasand Roswell N.M.). I'll keep the places I colored red (couldn't drag methere) to myself so I don't offend anyone..

Favorite places in AZ: Superstition Mountains, Huachuca Mountains(especially Ramsey Canyon) and the San Pedro River, Bisbee, El Charrorestaurant (downtown Tucson).

What SLA membership means to me: As an academic librarian working dailywith tomorrow's engineers, SLA provides me with the opportunity to meetwith people who know how engineers use information in the "real" world. Ialso find that my SLA membership provides me with the professional supportI need by providing me with new ideas and a forum to discuss these ideaswith other people in the profession.

My duties as membership chair: As membership chair I am in regular contactwith the membership office in Washington and should be able to directproblems to the right person as needed. I also maintain a current list ofthe Arizona Chapter membership. I encourage any one with questionsregarding their SLA membership to contact me at Gordon.Dutrisac@asu.edu or1-602-965-7609.
