ALABAMA CHAPTER SPECIAL LIBRARIES ASSOCIATION

FALL MEETING
October 14, 1999

(The Fall 1999 meeting was held on October 14th on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The program was an SLA interactive satellite presentation on "Effective Negotiating Skills for Licensing Content.")

The following are the minutes for the fall Alabama SLA Business Meeting held 10/14/1999 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama:

Jeff Graveline, the unofficial webmaster, solicited ideas for links to add to the web page. He also said he was thinking about changing the design of our web home page. Additionally, Jeff reported on meeting with the SLIS Student Chapter of SLA. They elected officers. He invited them to attend our Fall Meeting. Debbie suggested putting the officers’ names on the web page. It was suggested that the student chapter president be the liaison to the state chapter.

The Treasurer's report is as follows:

ASSETS
Cash and Bank Accounts
Alabama Chapter Checking Acct
Alabama Chapter Savings Acct
---------- ----------
TOTAL Cash and Bank Accounts
---------- ----------

$2,043.09
$4,437.83
----------
$6,480.92
----------
TOTAL ASSETS $6,480.92

There were no other officer reports. Debbie introduced all officers and committee chairs present at the meeting. She presented the idea for a chapter email discussion list and asked for feedback. Many members were interested in establishing this list. Debbie will provide more information on this soon.

Finally, Debbie asked if the membership was interested in hosting Donna Scheeder, President Elect SLA, for our Winter Meeting on February 10, 2000. She asked if we were committed to doing the necessary planning and work to make this event a success. The membership voted in favor of hosting an evening event with Ms. Scheeder as well as an educational session the following day. The evening event will be held at Southern Progress. We will invite our bosses to this as well as other librarians in the state. The educational session will probably not include Ms. Scheeder; the topic still needs to be decided.

Some of the tasks that need to be planned and handled for the Winter Meeting are:

  • Invitations - perhaps different kinds - one type for the membership and another for guests
  • PR
  • Catering
  • Identifying special and other libraries to invite
  • Decorations - possibly around a millennium theme
  • Nametags - possibly different ones for bosses
  • Transportation and entertainment for Ms. Scheeder
  • Possibly announcing the recipient of our minority scholarship

Debbie announced that Frances Davis at Tuskegee has offered to host the 2000 Spring Meeting. Send any program ideas to Debbie or Melanie.
