You're in for a tasty treat! Once again this year's Michigan SLA Holiday Party will be at Schoolcraft College - one of the nation's finest culinary arts programs - whose professional chefs are whipping up a fabulous holiday buffet for our gastronomical pleasure. We'll feast on roast sirloin with aus jus, herb crusted Atlantic salmon with lobster tortilla broth, and vegetarian canneloni, accompanied by a full range of sides and topped off with a decadent chocolate dream cake for dessert.
And don't forget the silent auction afterwards! The proceeds will go towards sending a library science student to the SLA Annual Conference.

Our third Annual Holiday Auction will be held during the Holiday Party. The proceeds will go towards sending a library science student to the 2010 SLA Annual Conference.

Registration information for meetings will be mailed 3-4 weeks prior to the program date. Most meetings will begin at 5:30 pm, ending around 7:30 pm. You may also receive announcements by joining the Michigan Chapter Discussion List (SLA-CMI).

The May 24, 2007 presentation on Free Business Websites (PDF) is now available along with More Free Business Websites (PDF).
Mary Ellen Bates' presentation (PDF) on February 1 illustrating how to sell and promote library services in the special library environment is now available. The presentation offers practical advice and suggestions that librarians can take back to their organizations to demonstrate to its employees that even in the age of the Internet, the library can be a powerful tool to assist them with their work.
The presentation (PDF) from the April 18, 2006 program at J.D. Power program is now available. J.D. Power and Associates is a global marketing information firm that conducts independent and unbiased surveys of customer satisfaction, product quality and buyer behavior. Denton Dance spoke about the company and how it uses information research to perform its services.
The February Program at Wayne State University was very well attended. The speaker, Jennifer Rosenzweig, has graciously allowed us to post her presentation, Improving Performance Through Strength 2-10-06 (PPT), to our website. Jennifer's presentation is based on the book "Now, Discover Your Strengths" by Marcus Buckingham (co-author of "First Break All the Rules") and Donald Clifton.
Research by Buckingham and Clifton suggests that we will benefit more by focusing on our strengths, than through focusing on improving our weaknesses. Uncover your own strengths and learn how to take advantage of this cutting edge thinking.
The personal strengths assessment that accompanied the program can be found at http://www.literacyworks.org/mi/assessment/findyourstrengths.html. This tool will reveal your top "intelligences."

The 2008-2009 MI SLA Mentoring Survey is now available. All of you who would like to be a mentor or a mentee, please complete the survey below. After we receive responses, you will be matched with a partner. This should prove to be very valuable for our professional development. A thank you to all who helped with this survey.
No-Show Policy
In December 2007, the SLA Michigan Chapter Board will institute a no-show policy. If a member RSVPs and indicates they will pay at the door, and then does not attend the meeting, that member will be billed for and responsible for the cost of the meal. Members will have up to 72 hours (three days) prior to a meeting to cancel via phone, e-mail or in writing (unless otherwise noted). After that, the guarantee has been given to the venue and we are responsible for payment. In the case of personal emergencies, requests for exceptions will be reviewed by the board.
No Cash Policy
In December 2007, the SLA Michigan Chapter Board will institute a no cash policy. When paying at the door, members are requested to use checks or money orders, but not cash. If a member does not have a check or money order with them, we will verify their address and send an invoice after the meeting. This change is to a) eliminate the need for those who check-in attendees at the meetings from having to make change, and b) avoid a program committee member carrying cash after a meeting.
The Michigan Chapter of the Special Libraries Association recently celebrated its 75th Diamond Anniversary with a series of events held in Dearborn on May 13th that were attended by over 100 information professionals from public, academic, corporate, government, medical, and legal libraries throughout Michigan.

The MI Chapter Discussion List is an electronic forum for discussion and communication. Job ads and program announcements are usually posted here first. You do not have to be a member of the chapter to join, but you must be a member of the list to post an announcement.
The Michigan Chapter is bringing together students and experienced librarians through its Mentoring Initiative. The purpose of this program is to bring experienced librarians and information professionals together with students and those new to the field in order to help them become integrated into the profession.
